Topic : My home village

I was born and spent my early childhood in Tien Canh

commune, Tien Phuoc town, Quang Nam province. It’s about 20 km to the west of Tam Dan, where I’m living now. You can go there by motorbike. It takes about 30 minutes. In my town there is a river called Tien river, here you can see the poetic landscape, especially at sunset.

I left my village when I was 7 years old. So the vivid

memories of the village and my childhood seem never to

fade. I still remember times when I and the kids in the village played some games such as blindman’s bluff, tag and so on.

We also flew a kite in the windy summer afternoon. Whenever my heart sinks, I think about my home village and at that time I feel quiet and peaceful in my mind. Even though many years have passed, I still clearly recall the stream behind my house, where my friends and I used to swim, where beautiful

summer afternoons pass enjoyably.

In the distance, the ranges of mountains lie quietly. I always

remember the time when I got up earlier than usual. Looking out, I saw my mother carrying two bundles of firewood over her

shoulders coming in through the yard. Like many other villagers, my mother used to get up very early to go to the mountain to chop firewood. Life in my village was simple then. People got fish from the river, firewood from the mountain, rice from the fields and love from one another. Nowadays, life has changed for the better.

There are good facilities such as the stadium, the hospital, the

library. Even the Internet is available. The people in my village are very friendly and hospitable. They plant wet rice, sweet potatoes, maize and raise cattles, pigs ,hens and ducks for a living. They are busy all the year round working in the fields. Although they live a hard life and do not have a real vacation, they always look happy and life-loving. They are considerate towards one another.

I love my home village, the people and the scenery there. I love my village, that’s my heart and the place I will always keep in my mind.

I was born and grew up in Tam Dai. It is about 10 km to the south of Tam Ky. It lies near the foot of a mountain and by Phu

Ninh Lake, so it is very cool in the summer. On holidays many

visitors come to visit Phu Ninh Lake because it is a beautiful lake in Quang Nam. Although my village is small and still poor, it has

enough facilities such as schools, hospitals, restaurants and so on.

It is very quiet and peaceful. The villagers are very friendly and kind. They work hard all day on the farm. They plant rice, corn, vegetables and raise cattle, chickens and pigs for a living. In the past there wasn’t electricity, so they used to go to bed early in the evening, but now there is electricity everywhere so they spend their free time listening to the news on the radio, reading newspapers or watching television for

entertainment after a hard working day. Sometimes they go to the city by motorbike to do the shopping or visit their friends. In the afternoon, the children usually play soccer, go swimming or play volleyball. Sometimes after school they also help their parents herd buffalo, feed the chickens, clean their house and so on. On special days, the people in my village often hold the festival in the

communal house yard.

I love my home village very much. I am always proud of it.

Come to visit my village if you have a chance. It will make you feel pleased and happy.

Topic : Country life and city life

Living in the city is different from living in the country. Life in the city is very exciting, noisy and the people are very friendly, hospital and busy. However, life in the city has a lot of

disadvantages such as : the city surroundings are so dirty with polluted air and water. The city dwellers live under consant threat of pollution. The exhaust from all kinds of vehicles, from factory chimneys, industrial waste and all the smells, dirts and noise seriously spoil the environment. In many developing countries, people drop litter and leave waste material. Rivers and lakes are heavily polluted by poisonous waste, chemical and duping of oil and garbage. Smoky atmosphere in the city affects to health and shortens one’s life. The sanitary system does not work very well in many cities, so streets are flooded whenever it rains heavily. In many places, garbage dumps and blocked are the root of

disease. But in many people opinion, city is a good place that can offer them plenty of things to do.

The city is exciting compared to the boring country. There is lots of nightlife in the city such as : theaters, clubs, stores while the

concept of nightlife does not ever exist in the country.

Life in the country is very quiet and peaceful. The people are very friendly and helpful. The air is clean and fresh. Living in the country, people feel very safe. They don’t have to face the traffic jams,… . But there is not many things to do in the evening.

Nowadays life in the country is definitely changing for the better.

Many remote areas are getting electricity. People can have things like television, refrigerator, etc. And medical facilities are more easily accessible too. Therefore, I prefer living in the country to living in the city.

Hồ Thị Nam Phương – Lớp 10/3 Topic : Festivals (Tet holiday)

I’m sure that every Vietnamese knows about Tet and so do I.

Tet means the first morning of the first day of a new year. It marks the beginning of a new year on lunar new year, and the

beginning of Spring. This is sometime between January and February on solar calendar.

Tet is a big celebration in a year and a time for visits from family and friends. Families save money, store food and plan for Tet.

They buy new clothes, cook special food for three days and pay all the debts. During the week before Tet, the markets are very busy, the

roads are crowded with people and vehicle. People buy food, clothes and other things for the holidays. They clean and decorate their

houses. The color Red is a symbol of good luck and happiness, it is seen everywhere. People paint, clean and decorate home. They also decorate altar and graves with incense, flowers and candles. They believe that the died ancestors will visit their family for the holiday. The Buddhists go to the favorite pagoda and the Catholics go to church to pray.

On the first morning of Tet, children are given the red envelopes that contain “Lucky money” called li xi. Each family also has a branch of Mai or Dao in their home, symbol of Spring. There is traditional food called Earth cake, a square cake made with sticky rice and pork.

There are many customs such as we shouldn’t clean the floor, cry or say bad things during Tet. First- footing is made when the first visitor comes. The first visitor to a home is very important. If the visitor is rich and happy, the family will have good fortune that year.

Most of families are busy with preparing for Tet and so does my family. We plan many things for Tet. My mother cooks delicious food and buys new clothes for us. My father repaints our house and buys other items to decorate it. I and my sister also help with

decorating the altar and other things. At Tet, I and my sisters are given Lucky money, wear new clothes, eat special food, so I like Tet very much .

Tet is a popular festival with Vietnamese although they are anywhere in the world. They are always directed toward their

hometown, their root and the festival of their country.
