Date of preparing: Period 17- Week 9

STORY TIME

I.OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- To consolidate the sound of the letters Aa, Bb, Cc and Dd and the corresponding words.

- Learn and practice reading skills.

*Khôi Nguyên (1B)can read and say Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd words correctly and practice reading

1.Language focus:

- Vocabulary (revision): Ant, apple, alligator, acrobat, ball, bed, bee, bear, cat, carrot, clock, car, dog, drum, dragon, doll

2. Skill:Reading, listening, speaking, writing II. TEACHING AIDS:

1. Teacher: students’ book, CD, phonic cards 2. Student: student’s book, crayons/colour pencils III. METHODS: T.P.R; games.

IV. PROCEDURE:

1. Organization (1’) - Greeting

- Check Ps’ attendance

1B 2. Warm up (5’)

- Arrange some chairs, back to back, in the middle of the room.

- Choose phonics cards and place them on the chairs.

- Play a song (use a song from the previous units).

- When the music stops the students pick up a phonics card and, one at time, tell Teacher the name of the item pictured on their phonics card.

- The student who gives an incorrect answer is out of the activity.

- Play the activity as many times as necessary.

3. New lesson (26’)

Teacher and Students’ activities Content Activity 1 (8’):

- (book closed) Tell the students that it’s story time.

- Ask them if they like reading stories and what their favourite story (or character) is.

- Prepare phonics cards of these words: ant, bed, dog, cat, clock, dragon, drum.

- Ask the students to read out the words.

- Invite students to guess what they think the story is about(do not dismiss any ideas).

- Ask the students to open their books

- Ask them questions about what they can see in the pictures.

- Play the CD and ask the students to listen and follow the story in their books, pointing to the pictures of the key words.

- Play the CD again pausing for the students to repeat.

- Ask individual students to read the story aloud.

Extension:

- Ask the student to close their books.

- Say a few sentences (some correct and some incorrect) and ask the students to say yes or no.

E.g. Teacher: The dog is on the bed.

Student 1: Yes!

Teacher: The dragon is on the clock.

Student 2: No! etc Activity 2: (8’)

- Point to the animals and ask students to name them.

- Ask the students to say which animals appear in the story.

- Ask them to colour those animals.

2. Which animals are in the story? Colour

4. Consolidation (2’)

- Read the sentences in the story, pause at the key words.

- Invite the students to mime them (the dog, the bed, the ant, the cat, the clock, the dragon, the drum).

- Have the students come to the front of the classroom and act out the story.

- Encourage them to have fun as they perform.

5. Homework: Ask students to revise the story at home.

REVISION

I. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to consolidate the sound of the letters Aa, Bb, Cc and Dd and the corresponding words.

1. Language focus:

- Vocabulary: revision (ant, apple, alligator, acrobat, ball, bed, bee, bear, cat, carrot, clock, car, dog, drum, dragon, doll)

2. Skill: Reading, listening, speaking, writing II. TEACHING AIDS:

1. Teacher: students' book, CD, phonic cards, software 2. Student: Activity book, crayons/colour pencils III. METHODS: T.P.R; games;

IV. PROCEDURE:

1. Organization (1’) - Greeting

2. Warm up (4’): slap the board

- Put up some phonics cards on the board.

- Line up students into 2 teams of 6.

- Call a student from each team to stand 1m from the board.

- Read words out loud, one at time (e.g. ant), the students must run to tap the card of that word.

- The student who taps the correct card first will get 1 point for his/her team. The team with the most points wins the activity.

3. Revision & Practice (24’)

- Explain the activity

- Ask the students to say the letters.

- The students match the upper case letters to the lower case ones.

- Say the letter and the sound.

- Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help, ask individual students to say out the letter and the sound.

Activity 2: Look and tick (6’) - Explain the activity.

- Ask the students to name the items.

- Ask them to tick the correct letter that corresponds to each picture.

- Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help, ask individual students to say out the sound or the item.

- Explain the activity.

- Ask students to name each picture.

- Ask students to match the pictures that begin with the same letter and then match them to the corresponding letter.

- Go around and provide any necessary help.

- Explain the activity.

- Say the names of the items.

- Play the CD.

- The students listen and circle the correct picture.

4. Consolidation: (6’) Activity: Run and Touch

- Ask 12 students to come to the front of the classroom and make a circle.

- Give the students randomly 12 phonics cards of the words they have learnt. Say:

Go!

- The students must find and get in line with other students holding cards beginning with the same letter.

- The first students to make a complete line win the activity.
