ABSTRACT

Pavetta polyantha (Hook.f.) Wall. ex Bremek., a new record for the flora of Vietnam belong to Rubiaceae, is studied and described. Before, this species only distribited in China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan), Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines. In this paper, we discrible fully about original reference and relevant references, type, morphological characteristics, distribution, ecology, picture, the table compares the characteristics to the nearest species (Pavetta swatowica Bremek.). Pavetta polyantha is similar to P. swatowica but difference by the size and type of hair in petiole; shape and size of leaf; type of inflorescence, position of inflorescence, type of hair in inflorescence and the size of peduncle; character of corrola and size of style.

Keywords: new record Pavetta, Pavetta polyantha, Rubiaceae, Vietnam

INTRODUCTION*

Pavetta L. (Rubiaceae) is a genus of over 340 species distributed from Africa through Arabia, India and South-East Asia to tropical Australia [1], [2], [3], [4], [6]. In Vietnam, the genus Pavetta was taxonomically studied by several authors [7], [8], [9] and currently 19 species has been reported [7], [8]. After examining all the specimens of Pavetta from Vietnam kept at HN, specimens collected in 1964 from Dan Khao Mountain, Vang Leng Village, Tung Chung Pho Commune, Muong Khuong District, Lao Cai Province, the north of Vietnam, are found to be different from known Vietnamese species by leaf blade drying membranous, narrowly obovate or lanceolate, 9-13 x 3.5-4.7 cm, with several bacterial nodules, adaxially glabrescent, abaxially puberulent at least along veins, base cuneate or acute, apex acuminate; secondary veins 6-8 pairs. Further studies reveals that it represent a new recorded species from Vietnam, Pavetta polyantha (Hook.f.) Wall.

ex Bremek., and is closed to Pavetta swatowica Bremek., in the leaf blade drying membranous, narrowly obovate or lanceolate.

The present study gives the species description and photographed (Fig. 1).

Furthermore, a comparison of diagnostic characters between this species and a related species, Pavetta swatowica Bremek. is made.

(Table 1).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Materials: This study is mainly based on examination of all the specimens of Pavetta examined using light microscope. Photographs of the type specimens of Pavetta polyantha was kept in the Kew herbbarium (K).

Methods: We have applied the morphological comparison method in this study, according to Pham Hoang Ho [7], Tran Ngoc Ninh [9].

Shrubs, 1-3 m tall; young branches compressed to subterete, glabrescent or puberulent. Petiole 10-30 mm, puberulent;

leaf blade drying membranous, narrowly obovate or lanceolate, 9-13 x 3.5-4.7 cm, with several bacterial nodules, adaxially glabrescent, abaxially puberulent at least along veins, base cuneate or acute, apex acuminate; secondary veins 6-8 pairs; stipules ovate-triangular, 5-7 mm, puberulent or glabrescent, shortly aristate. Inflorescences terminal on developed branches, laxly corymbose, ca. 9 x 15 cm, many flowered, strigillose to glabrescent; peduncle 1.5-2 cm;

pedicels 3-5 mm. Flowers pedicellate. Calyx with hypanthium portion ellipsoid, 1-1.2 mm, densely strigillose; limb 1-1.5 mm, sparsely strigillose, lobed for up to 1/2. Corolla white, outside glabrous; tube 19-22 mm, bearded in throat; lobes narrowly ligulate, 6-7 mm, obtuse to rounded. Style ca. 30 mm. Drupe globose, ca. 8 mm, glabrous. (Fig. 1).

Distribution: China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan), Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam (Lao Cai Province).

Ecology: Sparse forests, streamsides; 900-1200 m

Specimens examined: VIET NAM, Lao Cai Province, Muong Khuong District, Tung Chung Pho Commune, Vang Leng Village, DKSVT 3256, 29th December, 1964 (HN!).

Notes: P. polyantha is superficially similar to P. swatowica., a wide spread species on the from Dan Khao Mountain, Vang Leng Village, Tung Chung Pho Commune, Muong Khuong District, Lao Cai Province, the north of Vietnam, and might be mistaken for completely separate taxon at first sight. The differences between the two taxa are presented in Table 1.

CONCLUSION

1. Discribled morphological characteristics with figure, distribution, ecology, specimens examined of Pavetta polyantha (Hook.f.) Wall. ex Bremek

2. List mainly morphological characteristics about petiole, leaf, inflorescences, corrola, style between Pavetta polyantha and P.

Pavetta polyantha (Hook.f.)
