I. CÁCH SỬ DỤNG
1- Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm trong quá khứ
Eg:
- Ba was taking a shower at 8.o’clock last night. ( Lúc 8h tối qua bạn Ba đang tắm)2- Diễn tả hai hành động xảy ra đồng thời ( xảy ra song song) trong quá khứ
Eg:
-
While I was taking a bath, she was using the computer.( Trong khi tôi đang tắm thì cô ấy dùng máy tính.)- While I was driving home, Peter was trying desperately to contact me. (Peter đã cố gắng liên lạc với tôi trong lúc tôi đang lái xe về nhà.)
3- Diễn tả 1 hành động đang xảy ra(ta chia động từ ở thì QKTD) thì có 1 hành động khác xen vào(chia động từ ở thì QKĐ)
Eg:
-
I was listening to the news when she phoned.( Tôi đang nghe tin tức thì cô ấy gọi tới. )- I was walking in the street when I suddenly fell over. (Khi tôi đang đi trên đường thì bỗng nhiên tôi bị vấp ngã.)
- They were still waiting for the plane when I spoke to them. (Khi tôi nói chuyện với họ thì họ vẫn đang chờ máy bay.)
4- Hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ và làm phiền đến người khác
Eg: - When he worked here, he was always making noise (Khi anh ta còn làm việc ở đây, anh ta thường xuyên làm ồn)
- My mom was always complaining about my room when she got there (Mẹ tôi luôn than phiền về phòng tôi khi bà ấy ở đó)
- She was always singing all day. (Cô ta hát suốt ngày) II. CÔNG THỨC
1- Câu khẳng định (+)
S + was/were + V-ing (+ O)…
Eg: - I was thinking about him last night.
- We were just talking about it before you arrived 2. Câu phủ định (-)
S + was/were + not + V-ing (+ O)…
Eg: - I was not thinking about him last night.
- We were not talking about it before you arrived.
3. Câu nghi vấn (Yes/No – questions)/ câu hỏi có từ để hỏi (Wh-questions) (?)
(Từ để hỏi) + was/were + S + V-ing (+ O)?...
Eg: - Were you thinking about him last night?
- What were you just talking about before I arrived?
III. DẤU HIỆU NHẬN BIẾT
+ Trong câu có các trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ kèm theo thời điểm xác định.
– at + giờ + thời gian trong quá khứ (at 8 o’clock last night,…)
– at this time + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at this time two weeks ago, …) – in + năm (in 2000, in 2005)
– in the past (trong quá khứ)
+ Trong câu có “when” khi diễn tả một hành động đang xảy ra và một hành động khác xen vào.

Bài 1: Viết các câu sau sang dạng câu phủ định, câu nghi vấn và trả lời các câu hỏi đó bằng cả 2 cách (Yes/No)
