UNIT 11 : WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU ? LESSON 1 (1, 2, 3)

I. Objectives:

By the end of the lesson Ps will be able to: use the words and phrases related to the topic School lessons; ask and answer questions about school lessons, using What is the matter with you ? ask and answer question I ……….; say question and answer with the correct sentence stress.

II. Language focus:

- Sentence pattern:What is the matter with you?

- Vocabulary: a toothache ,a stomach ache , a store throat , an earache.

III. Resources:

1. Teacher’s: student’s and teacher’s book, pictures, cassette.

2. Students’: books, notebooks, workbooks.

1. Warm up:(5’)

Invite a few pupils to role-play the short story in Review 1.

Then introducethe new unit by where were you yesterday? on the board and check their comprehension.Explain the words lesson(s). Have pupil repeat the unit title twice

1. Look, listen and repeat:

- Have the class look at the pictures. Introduce the story by pointing at each character and elicit their answers to these questions : Who’s this ? Who is he / she talking with ? What are they talking about ?

- Play the recording all the way through for the class to listen and follow in their books. Play it again for them to repeat line by line. Finally, point to each picture for them to say the words in each bubble.

2. Point and say:

- Tell Ss that they are going to practice asking and asnwering questions about lessons , using what is the maater with you?

- Review the names of the lesson with the class.

- Get them to practice the answer before introducing the questions. Point to the timetable for the class to say I…..

- Have pupil practice the question and answer in pairs. Monitor the activity and offer help, if necessary.

- Invite one or two pairs to act out the dialogues in front of the class.

3. Let’s talk: (8’)

- Tell Ps that they are going to practise further by asking and answering questions about lessons.

- Get Ps to work in groups of four to ask and answer.

- Set a time limit for the class to practise. Monitor the activity and offer help, if necessary.

- Invite a few pairs to act out their conversations. They can make up the number of lessons they have so that each pair will have difference answers. Then give feedback.

- Spend a few minutes revising the story in Activity 1 by inviting Ps to act out the story.

4. Listen and tick.

- Tell Ps that they are going to listen to the recording and tick the timetable in their books.

- Play the recording all the way through for Ps to listen and do the task. Play it again for them to do the task.

- Get them to compare their answer before checking as a class..

Give explanations for the answers which Ps find difficult. Play the recording again to confirm the answers

- Tell the class that they are going to read the text and fill the gaps with. Give them a few second to read. Remind them to focus on the context to select the appropriate words from the book.

- Set a time limit for Ps to do the task independently. Monitor the activity and offer help, if necessary.

- Get them to compare their answers in pairs before checking as a class.

6. Let’s sing

- Tell the class that they are going to sing What is the mater with you? Have them read the lyrics and teach the unfamiliar words. Check their comprehension.

Play the recording all the way through for them to listen abd follow in their books. Play it again for them to repeat line by line. When pupils are familiar with the melody, ask them to sing along with the music before having them practice doing action.

- Invite a group to sing the song and do actions in front of the class.

- T tell Ps that they are going to read a story. Check comprehension by pointing at each picture to elicit their answers to these questions: What’s his/her name? Who is he/she talking with? What are they talking about?

- Play the recording again for Ps to listen and repeat in the lines in the bubbles. Finally, point to each picture for them to say the words in each bubble.

- Ask them to work in pairs. Monitor the activity and offer help if necessary.

- Invite one or two pairs to perform the activity. Then give feedback.

3. Let’s talk:

- Tell Ps that they are going to practise further by asking and answering questions in their books. If you want to add variety, you can invite them to imagine they are in different school and give different answer. Tell them to make their own timetables before practising

- Set a time limit for Ps to practise talking. Remind them to asnswer the questions with information about themselves.
