TEXT 1

Today's grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media, but the different generations' online habits couldn't be more different. In the UK the over-55s are joining Facebook in increasing numbers, meaning that they will soon be the site's second biggest user group, with 3.5 million users aged 55–64 and 2.9 million over-65s.

Sheila, aged 59, says, 'I joined to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them. It's a much better way to see what they're doing than waiting for letters and photos in the post. That's how we did it when I was a child, but I think I'm lucky I get to see so much more of their lives than my grandparents did.'

Ironically, Sheila's grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Children under 17 in the UK are leaving it – only 2.2 million users are under 17 – but they're not going far from their smartphones. Chloe, aged 15, even sleeps with her phone. 'It's my alarm clock so I have to,' she says. 'I look at it before I go to sleep and as soon as I wake up.'

Unlike her grandmother's generation, Chloe's age group is spending so much time on their phones at home that they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the other hand, has made contact with old friends from school she hasn't heard from in forty years. 'We use Facebook to arrange to meet all over the country,' she says. 'It's changed my social life completely.'

49. Many teenagers under 17 in the UK can’t stay away from their phones.

50. Ms Sheila doesn’t think that digital devices have affected her social life.

51. Ms Sheila uses social media to make contact with her old friends.

52. Chloe’s age group is spending much time with their friends in real life.

53. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Digital Devices in Education B. Digital Devices in Teenagers’ study C. Digital Habits of Parents D. Digital Habits across Generations 54. What does the word “it ” in paragraph 3 refer to ?

A. alarm clock B. phone C. Facebook D. the UK

Most people think of computers as very modern inventions, products of our new technological age. But actually, the idea for a computer was invented out over two centuries ago by a man called Charles Babbage.

Babbage was born in 1791 and grew up to be a brilliant mathematician. He drew up plans for several calculating machines which he called "engines". But despite the fact that he started building some of these, he never finished any of them. Over the years people have argued whether his machines would ever work. Recently, however, the Science Museum in London has finished building an engine that depends on one of Babbage's designs.

It has taken six years to complete and more than four thousand parts have been specially made. Whether it works or not, the machine will be on show at a special exhibition in the Science Museum to remind people of Babbage's work.

TEXT 3 Dear Mom and Dad,

I arrived in Da Lat at about 5 pm. Aunt Phuong met me at the bus station and drove me home in her car.

During three days in DaLat, I have done many interesting things. On the first day, I went to Pongour Falls which are among the largest waterfalls in Vietnam. The falls have spectacular scenery so I spent most of my time taking selfies. On the second day, I went to Valley of Love to have a picnic with Aunt Phuong family and took a lot of photos on green hills. Because it was a Saturday, there were quite a lot of people. That made me a bit tired as I am not a fan of crowds. Yesterday, I visited Linh Phuoc Pagoda, which has the country’s tallest bell tower. In the main hall, I enjoyed colourful paintings telling the life of Buddha while Aunt Phuong was praying. We decided not to eat out for fear of the spread of coronavirus, but Aunt Phuong can cook local specialities very well.

I feel really fascinated. I like the food made by Aunt Phuong, such as mixed salad, nem nuong, banh trang nuong and strawberry ice cream. I’m coming home on Friday morning. The bus arrives in HCM City at about 1.00 pm.
