LESSON 3 : LISTEN A. Objectives:

1. Knowledge

- By the end of lesson, students will be able to listen to specific information to select the correct pictures .

2. Skills

- Listening skill: Listen to the conversation and check the numbers of the correct pictures.

3. Attitude

- Help Sts have good consciousness in order to practice listening , doing some exercises.

B. Teaching aids: Textbook, tape, computer, louder speaker.

C. Methods: Jumbled words, Prediction, Questions and Answers, Recall.

1. Jumbled words

- Divide the class into 2 teams.

- Ask students from each to go to the board and write down the correct words.

- The team which is faster with more correct words wins the game.

III. New lesson(34')

Step 1: Pre - listening (10’)

- Today, we are going to listen to specific information to select the correct pictures.

- Set the scene: “Tim Jones’s Mexican pen pal, Carlos is visiting the USA.”

- Ask Sts to look at the pictures and tell the class what there is in each one, where the place is, what the people are doing.

* Prediction - Pictures

- Ask Sts look at the pictures (a, b and c) and

guess the numbers of the pictures . Step 2: While - listening (14’) 1. Listen and Check

- Ask sts to listen to the tape twice and correct the predictions.

- Give feedback.

- Ask Sts to read the questions then work in pairs to answer the questions.

- Play the tape once more to check the answers.

Step 3: Post - listening (10’)

* Recall:

- Ask Sts to work in groups to retell the story , using the words given .

- Help Sts have good consciousness in order to practice listening , doing some exercises.

C. Methods: Hangman, Gap Filling, True or False, Interview.

* Hangman :

- Draw strokes on the board. Each stroke stands for a letter of the word.

- Students take turn to guess the letters of the word.

- If a student’s guess is not right, the teacher draws a stroke (according to the order in the picture).

- If students guess wrong eight times, they lose.

Teacher gives the answer.

- The word has 8 letters. It is MALAYSIA.

III. New lesson (35') Step 1. Pre - reading (7’)

- Ask students what they know about Malaysia.

- Ask them to make questions for what they want to know.

Step 2. While - reading (18’)

- Ask Sts to read the text to find out the answers to their questions.

- Teacher gives feedback to the class.

- Ask Sts to read the text the second time to fill in the chart in exercise a) on page 10

* Activity 2. True or False:

- Ask Sts to read the text to do the True or False statements

- Ask Sts to answer the questions in front of the class.

- Teacher gives feedback to the whole class.

Step 3. Post - reading (10’)

* Interview:

- Ask work in pair.

- Give students their task

A: You are going to visit Malaysia. Prepare some questions to ask Maryam about her country ( refer to the chart on page 10 )

B: You are Maryam, from Malaysia. You have to answer A’s questions about your country.

* The interview may start like this:

A: Hi, Maryam. I’m going to visit Malaysia on my summer holiday. I’d like to know something about your country. Can you help me?

B: Yes, certainly.

A: What language is spoken in your country?

B: Bahasa Malaysia. English, Chinese and Tamil are also widely spoken.

A: Do children have to study any foreign language in school?

B: Yes, English is a second compulsory language in secondary school.
