UNIT 13. ZZ

I. MỤC ĐÍCH, YÊU CẦU

1. Kiến thức

UNIT 13 LETTER Zz Lesson 1 (1,2,3)  

I. AIMS

1. Knowledge :By the end of the lesson, students can be able to:

- Recognize and pronounce the letter Zz and its sound correctly - Understand, recognize and say the three Zz words

Write the letter Zz

2. Skills: - Develop students’ listening, reading, writing and speaking skill.

3. Attitude:

1. Teacher’s: Lesson plan, books, computer, speaker 2. Students’: Books, notebooks, workbooks.

III. METHOD

- Communicative approach.

Techniques:+ Work individually, in pairs/ groups.

2. Warm up: (5’)

Activity: Make up words 

Put up the phonics cards from the previous unit on the board Write the following letters on the board: g, t, y, r, e, o, c, a, l, w, u

Explain to the students that they have to make up words from the given letters

Tell the student to refer to the phonics cards for help.

After a limited time, ask the students to say out the words they made up 3. New lesson:

Activity 1. Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 80): Introduction of letter Z, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Zz (5’)

Show the students the zoo phonic card. Point to it and say: /z/. The students repeat.

Then say /z /- zoo. The students repeat.

Mime the sounds of different animals and say: /z /- zoo. Encourage the students to do the same.

Say the letter, the students perform the action and the word.

Follow the same procedure: /z/- zebra (mime galloping), /z/- zip (mime zipping up)

Write the letter Zz on the board next to the phonics cards. Point to it and say: “This is the letter /zed/. The letter /zed/ makes the /z / sound. The students repeat both sounds.

Activity: Where’s the letter? (4’)

Teacher prepares photocopies of a page/ pages from some story books.

Ask the students to work in pairs/ groups

Hand out the photocopies and ask students to search for and circle the letter Zz on the page(s).

In a limited time, the pair/ group has circled the most Zz is the winner.

This game can help the students understand the link between the letter sounds and words in books.

Pupil’s book open. (5’)

- Point to and elicit the sound of the letter and the words. /z/- zoo, /z /- zebra, /z /- zip - Play the CD. The students listen, point and repeat.

- The students color the letters Zz (explain that they can use any colors they like).

- Teacher goes around the class and elicits the letter and the word from individual students.

Activity 2. Listen and point. Colour. (Track 81): Read the words in sentence (6’) Point to the zoo and say: Look! A zoo! The students repeat.

Do the same procedure for zebra and zip Play the CD. The students listen and point.

Say: Look! A zoo! Ask the students to point to the corresponding item in the picture Repeat with the remaining item Look! A zebra!  Look! A zip on the zebra!

Ask the students to colour the zebra and the zip.

Go around the classroom ask the students to name the item they are colouring.

e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the zebra) Look! A …      Student 1: zebra! Etc

Activity 3. Chant and show! (Track 82) (5’)

Put up the zoo, zebra and zip phonics cards on the board

Point to the phonics cards and say: /z /- zoo, /z /- zebra, /z/- zip. The students repeat.

Play the CD. The students listen, follow in their books and chant.

Ask the students to take out their own zoo, zebra, zip picture cards and place them on their desks.

Play the CD again, ask them to listen and hold up the corresponding picture cards

Repeat the chant without the CD. Keep the rhythm by clapping hands. Pause before the words (zoo, zebra, zip) and encourage the students to name the items.

Activity: Writing in the air

Show the letter Zz again, have students write the Zz in air with their fingers.

Activity: My sound book

Ask the students to take out their notebooks.

Ask them to draw a big letter Z in their notebooks.

Ask them to decorate the letter.

Explain to the students that they will look at the letter and practice saying the sound at home.

2. Warm up: (5’)

Have students listen to the chant in lesson 1 and sing along. Repeat the chant without the CD, keep the rhythm by clapping their hands or snapping their fingers

Put the phonics cards on the board. Name the items. One at a time, ask students to do corresponding actions then say the sound of the letter and words.

E.g. Teacher: (Point to the zoo phonics card). Say /z/- zoo

       Class: (miming the sounds of different animals) / z /- zoo! etc 3. New lesson:

Activity 4. Listen. Read Along (Track 83) (8’) Ask: Can you see the /z/- zoo? Point to it.

Encourage the students to point to the picture of the word that the teacher says.

Play the CD. Have the students listen to the story once.

Play the CD again. The students listen and point to the pictures of the key words when they hear them in the story

Read the story. The students follow in their books.

Teacher reads the printed words then let the students look at the pictures and say the words.

Ask students work in pairs. One reads while the other checks, then they swap roles. Or one reads the printed words while the other looks at the pictures and says the words.

Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help.

Activity: Say the Sight Words (3’)

Point to and say the sight words: This, is, a, in, the, look, at, funny, with Have students repeat

Have some students read them aloud.

Activity: Guess (5’) 

Divide the class into two teams, A and B

Ask a student from one team to come to the board

Whisper one of the vocabulary words (from this unit) to the student.

Without speaking, the student draw a picture of the word on the board The first team to guess the word correctly wins a point.

Repeat the activity with a student from the other team.

The team with more points wins the game.

Activity 5. Song (Track 84) (5’) 

Put up the zoo, zebra, zip phonics cards up on the board.

Point to the zoo and zebra phonics card and say: This is a zebra in the zoo. The students repeat.

Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the song.

Play the CD. The students listen and sing along.

Play the CD again, ask the students to take out their own zoo, zebra, zip picture cards and place them on their desks. Play the CD again. The students listen and hold up the corresponding picture cards.

Activity: Hot cards (5’) 

Divide the class into teams (depends on the desk rows in the classroom) Hand out a phonics card to the first student of each team/ row

Play the song from Unit 2 (Track 84), the first students pass the phonics cards to the next one in their team/ row. When the card comes to the last student of each team/ row, pass it backward

Pause the song, the students holding the phonics cards must name them Give one point for the correct answer

Teacher can change the cards or hand out some more cards as necessary.

The team with the most points wins 4. Listen. Read Along
