This is why many people confuse a headline with a post title – however, the two should be very different. Everyone knows that skill endorsements are not an accurate indicator of quality or experience, but that's really not the point. This is a classic example of what the world-renowned sociologist Mark Granovetter described in his highly regarded thesis entitled "The Strength of Weak Ties".

STUDY AT A TOP RANKED

Connecting This does not mean that I recommend that you connect with as many people as possible, those who do are rarely successful (except recruiters who tend to connect freely to improve their search results). However, I suggest that connecting with people you don't know makes perfect sense, provided they are relevant and you engage with them before inviting them to connect (more on that later). The best way to build a network of relevant and useful first-level connections is to first decide on a clear strategy.

Once you have a clear idea of who you want to connect with, you can start making a list of people you want to target as a potential connection. Click on the ad to read more. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SCHOOL

Direct contact with key people in your network

Someone you think you could work with, for example an individual who does business/sells to the same people as you. Next If they are connected to these people, they may see your updates and activities on LinkedIn, which will ensure that they remember you, but these people are considered crucial to you, so it is important to go further, this can be done in different ways . ways and it is very important that every communication is targeted and personal to them. Share an article/blog post that you think will be of direct interest (this includes clicking on the share link and being able to send the link directly to the link).

Indirect contact with the whole of your network

Looking for interesting articles can be outsourced or delegated, but you should always make sure you read every article you comment on. LinkedIn itself can also be useful in this regard, as the 'LinkedIn Pulse' feed that you will see at the top of your home page is a valuable resource, especially if you fine-tune your selections so that your feed is for relevant sectors and topics. The popular 'Thought Leader' articles can also be helpful if you follow the right people.

Focused activity in a small number of key groups

Research and Contact Groups (join plenty)

For these reasons, you should join many groups, but you should go to the group settings and turn off all email alerts. If you don't, you'll soon find your email inbox overloaded with messages from these groups. The purpose of these groups isn't networking, it's just access and information, so you really don't need to stay up to date with the activities of these groups.

Networking Groups (join very few)

After joining such a group, you should adjust your email settings so that you receive daily emails informing you of any new discussions. Call them and ask for their views and then post their views in the discussion thread - DO NOT claim credit for this, just explain that you have a good contact who has an interesting view. Remember the story about Colin mentioned in the first chapter of this book.

He had managed to be referred to a new client by someone he shared a group with. They had never met but Colin had made a positive impression by engaging with the group and this, combined with a strong profile, had resulted in his HR consultancy winning a major contract. After the publication of the book, he found many other opportunities coming his way, and a few months later he was invited to speak at the leading conference on emotional intelligence in the world at Harvard University.

Monitoring certain activities of your connections

When you connect with someone, they are automatically able to see who else you are connected with. This may not be a problem for most people, but occasionally it can be prudent to hide the fact that you are in a relationship with someone. This means that her top-level links saw a notification about this new link on their homepage feed or when they visited Maria's profile and saw that she was linked to this lead (confidential).

Because the setting was off at the time of the connection, it will not be visible in her activity feed (at the top of her profile) or in the feed on her connections' homepage or in the 'New'. Now you may be wondering why she would want to show her connections at all, but many people (myself included) believe that it's good networking practice to show your other connections who you're connected to. The fact that you are connected to someone (e.g. a customer) is not really sensitive information, you could have connected years ago, however the timing of the connection is sensitive as it can be commercially sensitive information as was shown in the story from Mary.

LinkedIn offers all of us the ability to create our own company page, and this is one of the most underutilized features of LinkedIn. It's completely free to have a company page and doesn't take much time to set up. Company pages are very different from personal profiles, and while they are very useful, they have nothing like the functionality associated with a personal profile.

LinkedIn is and always will be a network of people who work for companies (even if the company is just itself). If you're working for a large organization, chances are your company website is already managed by your marketing or communications department. If you are self-employed, then you may need to set up your company page from scratch.

Anyone can do this provided they have a registered email address on their account that is from the domain of that company. I wouldn't be able to use the Gmail account to set up a company page, but I did use the etn training one since that's the domain I bought for my company.

Careers

Unlike personal updates, you can actually target who sees your updates (see the content section) and you can see a breakdown of the number of impressions and clicks each update receives.

Products & Services

The rest of your homepage will deal with status updates, these are covered in more detail elsewhere, but it's important to make sure you're regularly sending quality information and updates to your followers (followers are explained in this section). Company page Each product/service page has a description, website link, up to 3 contact points (as long as they are on LinkedIn) to whom a free message can be sent as well as a special promotion section (an external link, but with more space than the normal website link to describe the offer) and even the ability to embed a YouTube video on the page. For example, I've made sure that when a marketing person visits my products, they see my company page tutorial first, while if a recruiter visits, they see my tutorial search product.

Thinking of topics to write about can be difficult, but it will be much easier if you are well read yourself. If there are images on the website you are linking to, LinkedIn will display them and let you choose which one to use. When you see an update from one of your links or followed businesses in your homepage feed, you have three options;.

Another option you get when you see an update that contains a link is to post it in groups. This allows you to create a new (general) discussion in one or more groups of which you are a member. In addition, you may want to share your content directly within groups you are a member of.

When you first created a profile, LinkedIn asked you to enter a zip code, and if you're like most people, you'll have entered your home zip code. The problem is that when you're looking for a job, you really need your location (defined by postcode) to be where you want to work – which for many won't be where they live.
