Lesson 4: Read

A. Objectives:

1. Aims:

- Read the text for details about jeans.

- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to understand the content of the text about Jeans and do some exercises.

2. Practice skill:

- Practice comprehension reading skill.

3. The knowledge needs to get:

+ Standard knowledge: Read the text for details about jeans.

+ Advanced knowledge: recall the text using suggested words.

4. Basic language:

- Vocabulary: sailor, embroidered jeans, painted jeans, completely, generation.

- Tenses: simple present and past simple tense.

5. Attitude:

- Help ss to have good consciousness in order to practice reading for details.

B. Teaching- aids:

Lesson plan, textbooks, pictures.

C. Methods:

- Model-Talk-Practice, individual work, pair work

- Some techniques can be used: Kim’s game, ordering vocabulary, T/F prediction, comprehension questions, lucky numbers, gap fill, recall

II. WARM UP (4’) Shark’s attack:

- Cut out a shark (or crocodile) and a school boy/ girl from card.

- Draw some steps, then stick the cut out boy/ girl on top of the steps, the shark is in the sea.

- Draw 5 gaps for the word JEANS.

- Ask students as a whole class for a letter in the alphabet. They have to try to guess

the word. If their guess is wrong, the girl/

boy has to step down. If their guess

continues until students find out the word JEANS and the shark can’t eat the boy/

girl.

III. NEW LESSON (35’) Step 1. Pre Reading (10’)

* Vocabulary:

Practice saying the words, rub out the words one - by - one.

- Get students to repeat the words including the rubbed out ones. Students try to

remember all the words.

* Brainstorming:

- Ask students the questions: What do you want to known about jeans? Make

questions.

Elicit questions from students.

→ Who first designed jeans?

→ When did jeans become popular?/Why?

→ Where were jeans made?

→ What were jeans made of?

→ What are some famous jeans designers?

Step 2. While Reading (15’)

* Reading and checking:

- Ask students to read the text to find out the answers to their questions and add more ideas.

1. Vocabulary

- material (n): chất liệu, nguyên liệu

- cotton (n): bông, sợi bông.

- wear out (v): làm rách.

- style (n): kiểu dáng.

- embroider (v): thêu ( hoa văn, hình...)

- label (n): nhãn, nhãn hiệu.

1. Aims:

- Write an exposition or an argument.

- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to write an exposition or an argument, presenting one side of an argument.

2. Practice skill:

- Practice writing skill.

3. The knowledge needs to get:

+ Standard knowledge: write an exposition or an argument.

+ Advanced knowledge: write about opinions about wearing the clothes.

4. Basic language:

- Vocabulary: to encourage, to be equal in, to bear one's name, freedom of choice,

- Self-confident.

- Tenses: simple present tense.

5. Attitude:

- Help ss to have good consciousness in order to practice writing about wearing clothes.

Checking vocabulary: Rub out and remember

- Rub out a word in English and point to the Vietnamese translation and ask “What’s this in English?”. When all the English words are rubbed out, go through the Vietnamese list and get students to come to the board and write the English words again.

* Presentation: (CNTT)

- Show the following table on the board.

- Tell the students it is the outline to present one side of an argument.

- Give out to the students set of different color strips of paper, on which the content of the outline is written as follow: ...

- Ask students to go to the board, stick the strips on the correct space.

- They can do this task as a game. Group which has more strips filling in the table with correct content is the winner.

- Ask students to answer the questions to check their understanding.

+ What do you write in “introduction”? What language is used?

+ How can we present series of arguments?

- Ask students to read the topic and Outline A.

How is the argument organized?

- Ask students to read outline B and answer the questions:

+ What is the topic of the argument?

+ Why should secondary students wear casual clothes?

( wearing uniforms makes students feel comfortable, give them freedom of choice, makes students feel confident, makes school more colorful and lively.)

- Tell students to work in group to discuss and get some more ideas about the topic.

Step 2. While - writing (12’)

- Ask students on their own to write a paragraph of 100- 150 words to support the argument that secondary school students should wear casual clothes, using the outline on page 19.

Step 3. Post - writing (6’)

- When students have finished writing, let them compare their writing and correct mistakes.

- Take some writings to correct in front of the class.

My opinion is that secondary school students should wear casual clothes.

Firstly, casual clothes make students feel comfortable.

Secondly, wearing casual clothes give students freedom of choice.

They have rights to choose sizes, colors, and fashions of clothes that they love.

Thirdly, casual clothes make students feel self-confident when they are in their favorite clothes.

Finally, casual clothes make school more colorful and lively.

In conclusion, secondary school students should wear casual clothes. Wearing casual clothes is convenient,

comfortable, and fun.
