The present continuous talks about things happening now.

S + am, are, is + the -ing form of the verb.

Time expression: now, at the moment, at present

(+) Full Form:

I am

You/ We/They are He/ She/ It is

+ V-ing Short Form:

I’m

You/We/They +’re He/ She/ It+ ’s

(-) Full Form:

I am not

You/ We/They are not

He/ She/ It is not + V –ing

Short Form:

I’m not

You/ We/They+ ’re not or aren’

He/ She/ It + ’s not or isn’t

Present simple Present continuous We use present simple to

talk about routines or repeated actions.

Words and expressions:

always, usually, often, sometimes, never,

normally, every day, every Friday/Monday

We use present continuous to talk about actions in

progress.

Words and expressions: at the moment, now or today

Notes: There are some verbs (stative verbs) which we don’t usually use in the continuous form.

These include: understand, know, think, like, love, hate and want.

E.g.: I want to drink water. NOT I am wanting to drink water.
