STORY TIME

I. MỤC ĐÍCH, YÊU CẦU

STORY TIME 3 I. AIMS

1. Knowledge:- To consolidate the sound of the letters Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy and Zz and the corresponding words

Learn and practice reading skill

2. Skills: - Develop students’ listening, reading, writing and speaking skill.

1. Teacher’s: Lesson plan, books, computer, speaker 2. Students’: Books, notebooks, workbooks.

- Communicative approach.

Techniques:+ Work individually, in pairs/ groups.

- Greetings:  T – Ss greet each other.         

- Checking attendance:Who’s  absent today?Ss: Answer         Class

2. Warm up: (5’)

Choose some phonics cards from Units 9-13 Divide the class into 2 groups, A and B

Pass one card in each group (from the first row to the last row)

Say: Stop! The 2 students holding the cards must say the name of the item.

Keep passing the first card and pass the second card to each group.

Say: Stop! The 4 students holding the cards must say the name of the item.

Continue with other cards.

Content

Activity 1. Listen. Read along (Track 53) (10’) (book closed) Tell the students that it’s story time.

Ask them if they remember the previous story. If not, the teacher can spend some time going through it.

Prepare phonics cards of these word: watch, yo-yo, box, van, zebra Ask the students to read out the words

Invite students to guess what they think the story is about.

Ask the students to look at the book.

Ask them questions about what they can see in the pictures e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the ox in picture 1) Look! What’s this?

      Class: (It’s an) ox!

      Teacher: (pointing to the watch in picture 1) Yes! The ox has a ….

      Class: watch! etc

Play the CD and ask the students to listen and follow the story in their books, pointing to the pictures of the key words.

Play the CD again pausing for the students to repeat (chorally and/ or individually) Finally, ask individual students to read the story aloud

Activity 2. What’s in the box? Draw and color (8’) Point and elicit the items.

Ask the students to choose the correct item and draw it in the box.

Explain to them that they can use any colour they like to colour the item.`

Act Out (6’)

Read the sentences in the story, pause at the key words and invite the students to mime them (the watch, the yo-yo, the box, the van, the zebra).

Have the students come to the front of the classroom and act out the story Encourage them to have fun as they perform

Activity: Optional Story Time Activities (6’) Ask the students to work in pairs

Ask them to change parts or all the story, use their picture cards Invite some pairs to present their own stories

e.g.  Student 1: I like my (violin)! etc 1. Listen. Read along

2. Warm up: (5’) Stand and Sit

Tell the students to listen for words that begin with e.g the /j/ sound

Ask the students to stand up when they hear  words beginning with /j/ sound and sit when they hear words begin with other sound

Say slowly at the beginning and faster to make it more fun 3. New lesson:

What is the beginning sound? Colour. Say the letter and the sound. (6’) Explain the activity

The students say the names of the items and their beginning sounds Ask them to colour the corresponding letter.

Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help

Choose individual students to say the letters and the sounds aloud.

Activity 1. Look and tick (ü) (8’) Explain the activity

Ask the students to tick the letters that correspond to the pictures.

Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help, ask individual students to say out the sounds or the items.

Ask the class to say out the name of each item and the correct letter of each one.

Activity 2. Say the word. Circle the ones that begin with the same sound (5’) Explain the activity

Ask the students to say the words for each picture

Then ask them to circle the ones that begin with the same sound Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help

Activity 3. Listen and circle. (Track 87) (5’) Explain the activity

Elicit the names of the items Play the CD

The students listen and circle the correct picture

Listen again, pause and ask the students to repeat the item they hear.

Answer key: 1. yellow    2. ox    3. watch    4. van Activity: Run and Touch (7’)

Divide the class into two teams, A and B, make 2 lines Put up the phonics cards (from part 4) on the board.

Say the word. Two students, one from each team, race to touch the cards.

The first student to touch the card wins a point for his/her team.

The team with more points wins the game.

Teacher can make paper planes/ paper balls for the students to throw at the cards.
