Play the alphabet song and have students listen.

Play audio again and sing the song.

Put the flashcards on the board for the letter m in red.

Point to each flashcard, call out the letter's name, and have students repeat

Write the letters of the alphabet on the board and ask children to continue the list from their previous phonics lessons.

Ask the students to give the words that begin with the letters a to m (ant, boy, … ) from the previous phonics lesson.

Use phonics cards to prompt if necessary.

Optional activities:

* Option 1: Letter chain

- Place letter cards from A to M on the board.

- Ask one student to say the first letter.

- Ask another student to say the next letter.

- Continue with each student saying the next letter in the sequence, returning to the beginning when necessary.

- Remove one letter. The class repeats the sequence, including the missing letter.

- Remove one more letter each time, until students are saying the whole letters from their memory.     

* Option 2: Tracing on backs

- Review the previous phonics lesson. Divide the class into groups.

- Have each group make a line, with the first child standing near the board and the last child standing near the back of the classroom.

- Pass out a phonics card to the last child of each line, but don't have them look at the card until you say, Go.

- Have children “Write” the letter very slowly on their classmates’ backs with their fingers.

- The first child goes to the board, writes the letter, and says the sound. The quickest group with the correct letter and pronunciation wins.

Wrap-up

- Use the flashcards of letters from a to m.

- Show each card very quickly and then hide it again. Ask the class to call out the words that begin with the hidden letter.

* Option 2: Erase the sound

- Write the alphabet from a to m on the board.

- Have one student come to the board.

- Say a sound of a letter and have him/her erase it.

- Continue with the others.

- Summary.

- Ask the Ss about the m sound they have learn in the lesson and  how to say about the m sound .

- Have students write the letters and say the sound of the letter.

- Check answers as a whole class.

4. Play “ Board race”. 

- Have students look at the example.

- Divide the class into teams and have one student from each team stand a distance from the board.

- Write two letters on the board and then say a word beginning with one of their sounds.

- Have the students race to the board, touch that letter, and say the correct sound.

- The first student to touch the letter and say the sound gets a point for their team.

- Continue with other students.

Optional activities

* Option 1: Read my lips

Have two teams set up and the first person on each team must watch the teacher’s mouth.

Set a letter with no voice, just move his/her lips in tongue in the correct way. The first team to guess correctly gets a point.

* Option 2: Pair race

Divide the class into two teams, each team has some flashcards of letters i , j and pictures of ink, insect, juice, jump.

Say Go. Two students of each team take a letter and a picture run to the board. If the letter and picture are matched. They will have one point.

Continue the game as the same way.

Wrap-up

* Option 1: Phonics posters

Divide the class into groups of five.

Hand out sheets of paper and colored pencils.

Children choose the “J”, “K” sound.

They must draw pictures of one or two words with their chosen sound and color them.

Somewhere on the poster they should write the sound.

Put the phonics posters around the classroom.

* Option 2:  Patty Cake Divide the class into pairs.

Have children sit facing each other. Children slap their knees once, clap their hands once, and then clap their partner’s hands once as they both say /i/ ,/i/ , insect,….

Children repeat the action, this time saying /j/ /j/ juice,…..

Continue doing the action for each of the two letters and words.

- Summary. - Ask the Ss about the m sound they have learn in the lesson and  how to say about the m sound .

Write the letter X on the board and elicit its sound

Ask individual student to say a word beginning with the /ks/ sound Ask the rest of the class for verification.

- Introduction of letter Y, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Yy(5’) Show the students the yo-yo phonic card. Point to it and say: /j/. The students repeat.

Then say /j /- yo-yo. The students repeat.

Mime playing with a yo-yo and say: /j /- yo-yo. Encourage the students to do the same.

Say the letter, the students perform the action and the word.

Follow the same procedure: /j/- yellow (point to something yellow), /j /- yacht (rock back and forth from foot to foot and make wave sounds)

Write the letter Yy on the board next to the phonics cards. Point to it and say: “This is the letter /wai/. The letter /wai/ makes the /j / sound. The students repeat both sounds.

Activity: Where’s the letter? (4’)

Teacher prepares photocopies of a page/ pages from some story books.

Ask the students to work in pairs/ groups

Hand out the photocopies and ask students to search for and circle the letter Yy on the page(s).

In a limited time, the pair/ group has circled the most Yy is the winner.

This game can help the students understand the link between the letter sounds and words in books.

Pupil’s book open. (5’)

- Point to and elicit the sound of the letter and the words. /j /- yo-yo, /j /- yellow, /j /- yacht - Play the CD. The students listen, point and repeat.

- The students color the letters Yy (explain that they can use any colors they like).

- Teacher goes around the class and elicits the letter and the word from individual students.

* Disabilities Ss: Colour with teacher's help.

Activity 2. Listen and point. Colour. (Track 75): (6’) - Read the words in sentence

Point to the yo-yo and say: Yes, I have a yo-yo. Yes, it is yellow! The students repeat.

Do the same procedure for the word yacht Play the CD. The students listen and point.

Say: Yes, I have a yo-yo. Yes, it is yellow! Ask the students to point to the corresponding items Repeat with the remaining item

Ask the students to colour the yo-yo and the yacht yellow.

Go around the classroom ask the students to name the item they are colouring.

e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the yo-yo) Yes, I have a …      Student 1: yo-yo! Etc

* Disabilities Ss: Colour with teacher's help.

Activity 3. Chant and show! (Track 76) (5’)

Put up the yo-yo, yellow and yacht phonics cards on the board

Point to the phonics cards and say: /j /- yo-yo, /j /- yellow, /j/- yacht. The students repeat.

Play the CD. The students listen, follow in their books and chant.

Ask the students to do the actions of the words when they chant.

Repeat the chant without the CD. Keep the rhythm by clapping hands. Pause before the words (yo-yo, yellow, yacht) and encourage the students to name the items.

Activity: Chant in group (Optional)

Divide the class into 3 groups (yo-yo, yellow, yacht). Each group says the appropriate chant while the rest of the class claps.

Ask each group to mime the corresponding action or show the corresponding phonics cards while they chant.

Activity: Writing in the air (3’)

Show the letter Yy again, have students write the Yy in air with their fingers.

Activity: My sound book (2’)

Ask the students to take out their notebooks.

Ask them to draw a big letter Y in their notebooks.

Ask them to decorate the letter.

Explain to the students that they will look at the letter and practice saying the sound at home.

2. Warm up: (5’)

Have students listen to the chant in lesson 1 and sing along. Repeat the chant without the CD, keep the rhythm by clapping their hands or snapping their fingers

Put the phonics cards on the board. Name the items. One at a time, ask students to do corresponding actions then say the sound of the letter and words.

E.g. Teacher: (Point to the yo-yo phonics card). Say /j/- yo-yo        Class: (mime playing with a yo-yo) / j /- yo-yo

Lead-in Activity: Pass the phonics card (5’)

Line up the students in two teams (make sure two teams have the same number of members) Give the first student of each team a phonics card.

Say: ‘Go!” then the students say the words in the card and pass it over their heads to the student behind them, who continues saying the word and passing the card to the behind one.

The last student in each line races to hand their phonics card to the teacher and says the word.

The first team to do so wins (or wins a point- then continue the game).

While the students are passing the cards, teacher can say: “Stop” and ask the students holding the cards say the word loudly. If the student holding the card says the word correctly then he/ she wins a point for his/ her team. 

Activity 4. Listen. Read Along (Track 77) (8’) Ask: Can you see the /j/- yo-yo? Point to it.

Encourage the students to point to the picture of the word that the teacher says.

Play the CD. Have the students listen to the story once.

Play the CD again. The students listen and point to the pictures of the key words when they hear them in the story

Read the story. The students follow in their books.

Teacher reads the printed words then let the students look at the pictures and say the words.

Ask students work in pairs. One reads while the other checks, then they swap roles. Or one reads the printed words while the other looks at the pictures and says the words.

Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help.

Activity: Say the Sight Words (3’)

Point to and say the sight words: I, have, a, it, is, too, like, my, and Have students repeat

Have some students read them aloud.

Activity: Memory Master (5’)

Put up the 3 phonics cards on the board.

Choose 3 students to go to the board and make a line in front of the board.

Choose a student to be “Memory Master”.

The 3 students choose a phonics card and say the word (without touching the cards- each student chooses one phonic card)

The “Memory Master” must hand correct phonics cards to each student.

Activity 5. Song (Track 78) (5’)

Put up the yo-yo, yellow, yacht phonics cards up on the board.

Point to the yo-yo and yellow phonics card and say: A yellow yo-yo. The students repeat.

Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the song.

Play the CD. The students listen and sing along.

Play the CD again. The pupils sing and do corresponding actions. OR ask the students to take out their own yo-yo, yellow, yacht picture cards and place them on their desks. Play the CD again.

The students listen and hold up the corresponding picture cards.

Activity: Correct teacher (5’)

Prepare some phonics cards (from this lesson and previous unit) Ask individual student to correct teacher’s statements.

e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the yacht) Look! It is a yellow yo-yo.

       Student 1: No! It is a yellow yacht! etc
