UNIT 4: DID YOU GO TO THE PARTY?

Lesson 2: Part 1+2+ 3 I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge: By the end of this unit, pupils can:

- use the words and phrases related to the topic Past activities.

- ask and answer questions about what someone did at a party * Language focus:

- Sentence Pattern: What did you do at the party? We ...

- Vocabulary: had, chatted, played, watched 2. Skills: - Develop Ss speaking and listening skills

3. Core competencies and personal qualities: - Help Ss to be more confident to communicate in English with others. Students are confident in asking and answering question about past activities

II. TEACHING AIDS

1. Teacher’s: Lesson plan, books, CDs and computer, speaker, projector.

2. Students’: Books, notebooks, workbooks.

III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s and Ss’ activities Content 1. Warm up: (5’)

Spend a few minutes revising the previous lesson by having the class sing the song What did you do on Teachers’ Day?

2. Presentation.

Act 1: Look, listen and repeat( 7’)

* Set the scene:

- T uses the picture of the dialogue to lead Ss in the conversation

- Ask students to look at the 4 pictures in the book and elicit.

+ How many pictures are there?

+ Who are they?

+ What are they doing?

- Play the recording all the way through for Ss to listen and follow in their book.

- Play the recording again for Ss repeat the text several times.( line by line in the bubbles).

- Point to the picture for Ss to read the

- Have Ss to find out the new structure.

Act 2. Point and say.(14’) a. Presenting new words.

- Point to the pictures and elicit the new words. Ask them to pay attention to the pronunciation of the words.

- T writes the word on the board.

- Do the same way with other words.

- T asks Ss to copy down.

Check vocabs:

- What & where.

b. Sentence Pattern:

* Presenting model sentences.

- Point to the first picture and elicit the time and the activity to fill in the gap. Put the sentence on the board: How often do you……..?- I………everyday/once/ twice a week/ month. and have Ss repeat them several times.

- Check the form/ use/ meaning/

Intonation.

3. Practice.( Picture drill)

- T (teacher): Tell the class that they are going to practise asking and answering questions about activities in the past

- Review the past simple forms of the verbs have, play, chat and watch, and have pupils practise saying the sentences: We had nice food and drink. We played hide-and-seek.

We chatted with friends. We watched cartoons.

- T: Point at each picture and ask What did you do at the party? to get the class to answer, using the prompts under each picture..

- S: listen and answer chorally -T: Have pupils practise asking and answering in pairs. Monitor the activity and offer help, if necessary.

- Invite one or two pairs to speak to check

2. Point and say.

- Vocabulary: had, chatted, played, watched 2. Skills: - Develop Ss listening and reading, writing skills

3. Core competencies and personal qualities: - Help Ss to be more confident to communicate in English with others. Students are confident in asking and answering question about past activities

II. TEACHING AIDS

1. Teacher’s: Lesson plan, books, CDs and computer, speaker, projector.

2. Students’: Books, notebooks, workbooks.

III. PROCEDURE

Play the game: Order the words Act 1: Listen and circle a or b(10’).

*Pre: Tell the class that they are going to listen and circle a or b to complete the sentences. Ask them to read the sentences and guess the answers. Check if they understand the text.

*While: Play the recording all the way through for pupils to listen and circle. Play it again for them to check their answers. Monitor the activity and offer help, if necessary.

Get pupils to compare their answers before checking as a class. Play the recording a third time to confirm the answers.

*Post: Play game “slap the picture”

-Stick the picture of Nam, Mai and Phong on the board.

-Play the recording, students listen and slap the correct picture.

Act 5: Write about you(10’)

*Pre: Tell the class that they are going to answer some questions about what they did.

- Remind them that they should write about things that really happened to them.

*While: Set a time limit for them to write the answers in their notebooks.

Monitor the activity and offer help, if necessary.

- Get them to swap and read each other’s answers before inviting one or two pupils to read their answers aloud

*Post: Ask some students to read aloud

- Tell the class that they are going to play the game Tic-tac-toe, following the procedure in Games in the

Introduction.

- Explain how the game is played. Tell the class that they have to complete the sentence in order to mark a box with an X or O.

- Set a time limit for the class to play the game in pairs. When time is over, invite a few pupils to read aloud their questions and put them on the board.

- Then invite some pairs to practise asking and answering the questions.

Then give feedback.

By the end of this unit, pupils can pronounce two-syllable words with the stress on different syllables: 'party, 'Sunday, en'joyed and in'vite.

2. Skills: - Developing listening & speaking skills 3. Core competencies and personal qualities:

- Help Ss to be more confident to communicate in English to talk about their past activities

III. PROCEDURE

Spend a few minutes revising the previous lesson by inviting a few pupils to read their answer in lesson 2, activity 5

2. New lesson

Act 1.Listen and repeat(10’).

Have Ss open the book page 10, draw their attention to the two –syllable words with the stress in the first or second syllable.

- Play the recording twice and ask Ss to repeat

- Have Ss repeat the emphasis on word stress several times.

- Ask Ss to practice 4 words

- Ask Ss to read aloud 4 sentences several times

- Have Ss to practice in pair - Call on some Ss to read aloud.

- Have the whole class recite to reinforce their pronunciation.

Act 2. Mark the word stress. Then say the word aloud(10’).

*Pre:

- Have Ss look at the words

- Ask Ss what they have to do in this task.

*While:

- Set the time for students to mark the stress.

- Compare the answer with the partner.

- Give help if neccessary

*Post:

- Play “slap the board”

- Teacher sticker number 1 for first stress syllable; number 2 for the second stress syllable on the board.

-Teacher read the word, students listen and slap on the correct first or second syllable.

Act 3. Let’s chant(10’).

*Pre: -Tell the class that they are going to say the chant Where did you go? Have pupils read the chant and check their

Act 4: Read and answer (10’):

*Pre: Tell Ss that they are going to read the text. Check understanding.

* While: Give Ss a few seconds to read the text in silence then answer the questions .

Give Ss time to do the task. Go around to offer help, if necessary.

Get Ss to swap and check their answers before checking as class.

Act 5: Write about your birthday party (10’).

*Pre:Tell Ss that they are going to write about their own birthday parties.

Give pupils time to read and complete the sentences, using information about themselves

*While: Set a time limit for them to do the task independently. Monitor the activity and offer help, if necessary.

- Remind them to use capital letters for the first letter of the word at the beginning of each sentence and the names of people, and to put a comma or full stop in the appropriate places.

- Get pupils to read their writing in pairs before inviting some pupils to read their answers aloud.

Act 6: Project(7’)

- Tell the class that they are going to think about what present to give a classmate for his/her birthday.

- Get pupils to work in groups of four.

Ask them to choose a classmate who does not belong to their group and discuss what birthday present will suit him/her and why.

- Set a time limit for them to do the task.

Invite one or two groups to present their ideas.

Act 7: Color the stars(3’)

-T asks the Ss read the statements and check their comprehension.

- T gives time for Ss to color the stars - T invites some Ss to read the

statements aloud.

- T gives Ss further supports (if necessary) to achieve certain objectives.
