WEEK 11 – GRADE 1 – LETTER E (35 minutes) PERIOD 21 Ngày soạn:

Warm-up (5mins)

Greet students

Review the previous lesson by playing the

“Matching game”

- Make two columns on the board, A and B

- Write letters a, b, c, and d in column A and all, pple, ragon, and arrot

- Ask students to match the letters in column A to those in the column B and make four words - Have the students write the words in their

notebooks

- Choose individual students to come to the board, draw lines and say the words

- Give feedback

Presentation & Practice

1. Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 28):

Introduction of letter Ee , its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Ee (7mins)

Use a card with letter Ee (or write on the board the letter Ee) to introduce to the students the new lesson.

Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter Ee /i/. The letter b says /e/.”

Play the CD

Ask students to repeat several times and check

their pronunciation (letter Ee /i/and its sound /e/)

Use the phonics cards with egg, elf, and elephant, read the words out loud and ask students to repeat.

Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to understand the meanings of the three words.

Check students’ understanding: Teacher says the words, all students do actions and vice versa.

Call some students to say the words out loud and correct their mistakes (if any)

Activity: Pupils’ books open (3mins)

Point to and elicit the sound of the letter and the words

Play the CD

Ask students to listen, repeat and then colour in the letter

During this process, go around the classroom and elicit the letter and the words from individual students

2. Listen and point. Match. (Track 29): Read the commands with preceding “Hello” (5mins)

Have students look at the books and listen to the words: hello

Use gestures (hand actions) to help Students to understand the meanings of commands

Ask students repeat by using the phonics cards of egg, elf, and elephant combining with gestures

Then, ask students to look at the missing puzzle pieces and match them to the pictures

Go around the classroom and provide necessary help

Activity: Pass the phonics card Game (5mins)

Using the phonics cards of Ee, egg, elf, elephant

Line up the students into 2 teams

Give the first students of each team a phonics card and say “Go”

The students say the corresponding words and pass the phonics card over their head to the students behind them

Next, those students repeat the word and pass the phonics card between their legs to the students behind them

Continue to pass the phonics card over their heads and between their legs to the last students

Which team hands their phonics card to Teacher and says the word correctly will get one point

Which team has the most point will be the winner

Continue the game as many times as necessary

3. Chant and show! (Track 30) (5mins)

Put up the lyrics of the chant on the board

Without music, use the phonics cards and step students to sing the chant with egg. Do the same with elf and elephant.

With music, the whole class sings the whole chant.

Do the chant again using gestures for each word.

Give feedback

Production (5mins)

Activity 1: Writing in the air

Show the letter Ee again, have students write the Ee in air with their fingers.

Activity 2: Write down the words into Students’

notebook

Ask students write down: Ee, egg, elf, elephant into their notebook

Warm-up (4mins)

Greet students

Put the phonics cards on the board

Name the items, one at a time

Ask students mime the corresponding actions and day the sound of the letter

e.g. Teacher: (pointing the egg) Say ‘egg’

Class: (miming cracking open an egg) /e/ etc Or

Have students sing the chant in lesson 1, keep the rhythm by clapping their hands and doing hand actions

Presentation & Practice

Lead-in Activity: Yell it Out (5mins)

Ask students to work in pair

Have a pair come to the front of the classroom and

face each other with their hands behind their backs

Stick a phonics card onto each student’s back

Students have to look at the other student’s phonics card and be the first to yell out the word

Repeat the activity with the remaining pairs

4. Listen. Read Along. (Track 31) (8mins)

Ask the students to point to the picture of the word that the teacher says

Play the CD. Have the students listen to the story once

Play the CD again. The students listen and point to the pictures of the key words when they hear them in the story

Read the story. The students follow their books.

Teacher reads the printed words then let the students point to the pictures and say the words.

Ask students work in pairs. One reads the printed words while the other points to the pictures and says the words.

Activity: Say the Sight Words (3mins)

Point to and say the sight words: an, hello

Have students repeat

Call on some students read them aloud and correct pronunciation (if any)

Activity: Listen, Point, and Say (5mins)

Place phonics cards of egg, elf, and elephant around the classroom

Call out a word, e.g. egg. The students point to the correct phonics card

Alternatively, play the CD (track 31)

Ask students to listen and point to the correct phonics cards when they hear the word

(The teacher could have a student volunteer to say the word.)

5. Song (Track 06) (5mins)

Put the egg, elf and elephant phonics cards up on the board

Point to the elf and elephant, and say: “The elf is with an elephant, elephant, elephant”. The

students repeat.

Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the song.

Play the CD. The students listen and sing along.

Play the CD again. The students sing and do corresponding actions.

Activity: Musical Cards Game (5mins)

Divide the class into 3 groups, A, B and C

Hand the unit phonics cards (e.g. egg, elf and elephant) out to different student around the class

Play the lively music (the teacher should use the unit’s song)

The students pass the phonics cards to students next to them around the class while the music is playing

Stop the music suddenly. Ask the students who are keeping the phonics card speak out it

Play the music and continue

Remember to correct students’ pronunciation

line up in front of the board in the same order as the phonics cards

- Repeat the procedure with another group of students

Give feedback

Point to the letters and revise the sounds

Ask students to listen and tick the correct letter sound

The students repeat and perform a simple action, e.g. Students say It’s an elephant and mime being elephants for a few seconds

7. Listen, point and repeat. Colour the pictures of the words that start with the e sound. Say the e words. (Track 34) (10mins)

7.1 Listen, point and repeat (4mins)

Show the students the elbow phonics card. Point to it and say: /e/ - elbow. Ask them to repeat

Do action like elbow and say /e/, elbow

Encourage the students to do the same

Say the letter and ask students do the action

Play the CD

Ask students listen, point to and repeat the word 7.2 Colour the pictures of the words that start with the e sound. Say the e words (6mins)

Point to pictures and have students name them

Name some colours and ask the students to repeat

Ask the students colour the pictures which have Ee in them

Give the students 4 minutes to colour in the ‘egg’

and ‘elephant’ that have Ee in them

Go around the classroom providing any necessary help

Activity: Craftwork (10mins)

Ask the students to take out their notebooks

Ask them to choose one word the draw the letter and the picture in their notebooks

Tell them to colour the letter and the picture

The three first students who finish will show their picture to the class

Write on the board the big E and small e

Point to the letter E and say out loud “This is the letter E/i/. The letter E says /e/”

Point to the letter e and say out loud “This is the letter e/i/. The letter esays /e/”

Have the class repeat its sound chorally, then individually

Have the students say the sound individually, correct the pronunciation if necessary

Activity: How to write letter E (4mins) Writing& Speaking

Demonstrate how to write thebig E stroke by stroke

Draw an example of letter E using dashed lines

Use a different colored chalk to model tracing the letter E

Have some students practice tracing letter E on the board

Have students trace letter E in the books

Students say /e/ after each finished letter

Go around to give help if necessary

Repeat the same procedure with the lower letter e

2. Trace and match (page 12 – Activity Book) (6mins)

Copy the 2 boxes from the book to the board and put the phonics card of elbow up between them

Tell the students that you are going to write the letter Aa and Ee into the box

Demonstrate the writing

Draw linesto the correct pictures that correspond to each letter

Go around the classroom and providing any necessary help

Answer keys: 1. Aa – acrobat 2. Ee - elbow 3. What is it?Colour the Ee letters and say.

Activity 1: Revision of the letter from Unit 1 to Unit 5–Thumbs Up or Down game (4mins) Speaking& Listening

Hold up the phonics cards one at time

Ask students to confirm the word you say by putting their thumbs up or down and give the correct answer

e.g. Teacher: (holding up the ball phonics card) egg

Class: (putting their thumbs down). It’s a Ball Activity 2:Colouring (5mins)

Explain the activity

Ask the student to find and colour the letter Ee

Go around and give help as needed

4. Help the elf go to the elephant. Follow the e (page 13 – Activity book) (5mins)

Demonstrate by holding up the book and drawing an imaginary line

Go around and provide any necessary help

Consolidation (3mins)

Draw an imaginary letter E in the air

Signal the students to look at teacher’s mouth

Say “This is the letter ……..” (Use mouth to mime the sound /i/and students give the answer).

Say “The letter E says …….” (Use mouth to mime the sound /e/ and students give the answer).
