Warm-up (5mins)

Greet students

Revise the words from the previous unit through

‘Reorder Letter Game’

- Put up the egg, elf, elephant and elbow phonics cards on the board

- Write the letter of each word in jumbled order around the phonics cards

- Ask students to write the words in their notebook

- Ask individual students to come to the board and write the words

Presentation & Practice

1. Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 35):

Introduction of letter Ff , its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Ff

(7mins)

Use a card with letter Ff (or write on the board the letter Ff) to introduce to the students the new lesson.

Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter Ff /ef/. The letter f says /f/.”

Play the CD

Ask students to repeat several times and check their pronunciation (letter Ff /ef/ and its sound /f/)

Use the phonics cards with fox, fish, and frog read the words out loud and ask students to repeat.

Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to understand the meanings of the three words.

Check students’ understanding: Teacher says the words, all students do actions and vice versa.

Call some students to say the words out loud and correct their mistakes (if any)

Activity: What is it? (3mins)

Hold up the phonics cards fox, fish, and frog

Show one by one phonics card, partly hidden by a sheet of paper

Slowly reveal the phonics card

The students try to guess what the phonics card is

Go on the other cards

Remember to correct the students’ pronunciation 2. Listen and point. Choose. (Track 36): Read

the commands with preceding “My funny”

(5mins)

Have students look at the books and listen to the words: My funny

Point to the cat and say: I am a cat. Then, ask students to repeat

Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to understand the meanings of statements

Play the CD

Then, check by saying: My funny fox. Ask the students to point to the corresponding item in the picture. Repeat with the rest of the items in random order

Ask students to look at the pairs of pictures on the side and choose the correct one for each

corresponding animal

Go around and ask the students to name the item they are choosing

e.g., Teacher: (pointing to the fox) My funny, …

Student 1: fox! etc.

Activity: Memory Game (5mins)

Put the phonics cards of fox, fish, and frog on the board

Ask students to memorize the order of these cards

Ask students to close their eyes, remove one

phonics card randomly and ask individual students to name it.

Continue changing the other cards

Remember to correct students’ pronunciation throughout the lesson

3. Chant and show! (Track 37) (5mins)

Put up the lyrics of the chant on the board

Without music, use the phonics cards and step students to sing the chant with fox. Do the same with fish and frog

With music, the whole class sings the whole chant.

Do the chant again using gestures for each word.

Give feedback

Production (5mins)

Activity 1: Writing in the air

Show the letter Ff again, have students write the Ff in air with their fingers.

Activity 2: Write down the words into Students’

notebook

Ask students write down: Ff, egg, elf, elephant into their notebook

Greet students

Have students sing the chant in lesson 1, keep the rhythm by clapping their hands and doing hand actions

Presentation & Practice

Lead-in Activity: Find Your Partner (5mins)

Give phonics cards to individual students around the class

Give the corresponding phonics picture cards to different students

Ask the students with the sound cards to stand up one at a time and say the sounds on their cards

The students with the picture cards listen. If the sound is in their word, they stand up, show the card to the class, and say the word

4. Listen. Read Along. (Track 38) (8mins)

Ask the students to point to the picture of the word that the teacher says

Play the CD. Have the students listen to the story once

Play the CD again. The students listen and point to the pictures of the key words when they hear them in the story

Read the story. The students follow their books.

Teacher reads the printed words then let the students point to the pictures and say the words.

Ask students work in pairs. One reads the printed words while the other points to the pictures and says the words.

Activity: Say the Sight Words (3mins)

Point to and say the sight words: my, funny, and, are, with

Have students repeat

Call on some students read them aloud and correct pronunciation (if any)

Activity: Listen, Point, and Say (5mins)

Place phonics cards of fox, fish and frog around the classroom

Call out a word, e.g. fox. The students point to the correct phonics card

Alternatively, play the CD (track 38)

Ask students to listen and point to the correct phonics cards when they hear the word

(The teacher could have a student volunteer to say the word.)

5. Song (Track 39) (5mins)

Put the frog, fish, and fox phonics cards up on the board

Write the names of three animals below the phonics card: Frank – frog, Fin – fish, Fog - fox

Point to the frog, and say: “Frank is a funny frog”.

The students repeat.

Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the song

Play the CD. The students listen and sing along.

Play the CD again. The students sing and do corresponding actions.

Activity: Letter Writing Race (5mins)

Ask the students to open their notebooks

In 2 minutes, the students write as many, e.g. Ffs as they can

Activity: Sound and Word (5 mins)

Divide students into 2 teams, A and B

Put one of the phonics cards on the board

Ask a student from Team A to identify the sound (1 point), the picture (1 point), or both (2 points)

Continue with a student from Team B

Write the points for each team on the board. The team with the most points wins the game.

7. Listen, point and repeat. Colour the pictures of the words that start with the f sound. Say the f words. (Track 40) (10mins)

Show the students the fork phonics card. Point to it and say: /f–fork.. Ask them to repeat

Do action like fork and say /f/, fork

Encourage the students to do the same

and ‘fish’ that have Ffin them

Ask the students to take out their notebooks

Ask them to choose one word the draw the letter and the picture in their notebooks

Tell them to colour the letter and the picture

The first students to finish will show their picture to the class

- Hand Bingo cards out to the students

- Provide them with small pieces of paper to cover the words

- Say the words or show the pictures and have the students cover the words on their Bingo cards

- The winner is the first student whose card is covered and who shouts Bingo!

Revision& Practice

1. Trace and say (Page 14 – Activity Book) (8mins)

Activity: Revision of letter F, its sound (3mins) Speaking

Write on the board the big F and small f

Point to the letter F and say out loud “This is the letter F/ef/. The letter F says /f/”

Point to the letter f and say out loud “This is the letter f/ef/. The letter fsays /f/”

Have the class repeat its sound chorally, then individually

Have the students say the sound individually, correct the pronunciation if necessary

Demonstrate how to write thebig F by stroke

Draw an example of letter F using dashed lines

Use a different colored chalk to model tracing the letter F

Have some students practice tracing letter F on the board

Have students trace letter F in the books

Students say /f/ after each finished letter

Go around to give help if necessary

Repeat the same procedure with the lower letter f

2. Trace and match (page 14 – Activity Book) (6mins)

Writing & Reading

Copy the 2 boxes from the book to the board and put the phonics card of fox up between them

Tell the students that you are going to write the letter Cc, Ee and Ff into the box

Demonstrate the writing

Draw linesto the correct pictures that correspond to each letter

Go around the classroom and providing any necessary help
