2. Warm up: (5’) - Greeting

- Review the previous lesson through the ‘Memory game’

Put the phonics cards (from Unit 1 to 3) on the board Ask students to memorize the order of these cards

Ask students to close their eyes, remove one phonics card randomly and ask individual students

I.Presentation & Practice(25’)

Activity 1. Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 20): Introduction of letter Dd, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Dd(7’)

Use a card with letter Dd(or write on the board the letter Dd) to introduce to the students the new lesson.

Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter Dd /di:/. The letterd says /d/.”

Play the CD and ask the students to listen

Ask the students to repeat several times and check students’ pronunciation (letter Dd /di:/and its sound /d/)

Use the phonics cards with dog, drum, and dragon read the words out loud and askstudentsto repeat.

Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to understand the meanings of the three words.

Check students’ understanding: Teacher says the words, all students do actions and vice versa.

Call some students to say the words out loud and correct their mistakes (if any) Activity: Where’s the Letter(3’)

Ask students to work in pair

Hand out photocopies of pages from some story books

The students find and circle the letter Dd on these pages in 2 minutes The pair that has circled the most Dds will be winners

(This game can help the students understand the link between the letter sounds and words in books.)

Activity 2. Listen and point. Colour. (Track 21): Read the statements with preceding “It is a”(5’) Have students look at the books and listen to the drill:It is a

Point to the picture of dog and say: It is a dog. Ask the students to point to it and repeat Follow the same procedure and present the rest of pictures

Play the CD. While the CD is playing, ask the students to point to the corresponding picture and repeat

Ask students repeat by using the phonics cards of dog, drum, dragon combining with gestures  Then ask students to colour the drum using any colour they like.

Go around the classroom, asking students to name the items they are coloring Activity 3. Chant and show! (Track 22) (5’)

T show the chant on the screen

Without music, use the phonics cards and step students to sing the chant with dog. Do the same with drum and dragon.

With music, the whole class sings the whole chant. Do the chant again using gestures for each word

Give feedback Activity: (5’)

Divide the students into 3 groups (dog, drum, dragon)

Each group say the appropriate chant while the rest of the class claps

Allow them 1 minute tosay the sound of the letter and words and do corresponding action.

Activity 4. Listen And Read Along (Track 23)(8’)

Ask the students to point to the picture of the words you say.

Play the CD. Have the students listen to the story once.

Play the CD again. The students listen and point to the pictures of the key words when they hear them in the story

Read the printed words then let the students point to the pictures and say the words.

Ask students work in pairs. One reads the printed words while the other points to the pictures and says the words.

Activity: Say the Sight Words(3’)

Have students repeat

Call on some students read them aloud and correct pronunciation (if any) Activity: Word Chain Game(5’)

Put phonics cards on the board in a given order, e.g. dog, drum, dragon Invite the first student. He/ she says the first word in the sequence, i.e. dog Invite another student. He/she says the next word in the sequence, i.e. drum Continue with each student saying the next word in the sequence

Remove one phonics card. Ask students repeat the sequence, including the missing word Continue the same procedure until students can say the whole sequence from memory Activity 5. Song (Track 24) (5’)

Put the dog, drum and dragon phonics cards up on the board.

Point to the dragon, the drum and say: “It is a dragon with a drum, boom, boom-boom”. The students repeat

Activity 1: Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 20) (10’)

- Introduction of letter Q, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Qq 

- Use a card with letter Qq (or write on board the letter Qq) to introduce to the students the new lesson.

- Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter Q /kju:/. The letter P says /kw/.”

- Repeat several times and check students’ pronunciation (letter Q /kju:/ says /kw/.”)

- Use the phonics cards with queen, question, quit, read the words out loud and have students repeat.

- Use gestures to help students to understand the meanings of the three words.

- Stick the cards on board and have students repeat the words chorally several times (in the correct order and then in any order).

- Call some students to say the words out loud and correct their mistakes (if any) - Ask the students to open their books and colour in the letters

- Divide the class into two teams, team A and team B.

- Put one of the phonics cards (e.g: queen) on the board.

- Ask a student from Team A to identify the sound (one point), the picture (one point) or both (two points).

- Continue with a student from Team B.

-Write the points for each team on the board.

- Give feedback

Activity 2. Listen and point. Colour (Track21)(8’) Point to the teacher and say: Ask a question!

Have students listen and repeat.

Have students look at the book and listen to the words: a question, a queen, a quilt Have students listen and repeat the words for several times.

Ask the students: Is it a queen?

Have the students to point to the corresponding item in the picture.

Repeat with the rest of the items in random order.

Give the students 3 minutes to colour the queen and quilt by using any colour they like.

Go around the classroom asking students to name the item they are colouring.

E.g: Teacher: ( pointing to the quilt) What’s this?

Student: A quilt!

- Ask Ss to listen and point to the lyric - Sing along

- The whole class sings the whole chant.

Play the CD again. The students sing and do corresponding actions.

Activity: Jumping Game (5’)

Put a line of masking tape on the floor Designate one side True and the other False

Hold up a phonics card (e.g: question) and say: question Jump on the True side.

Hold up another phonics card (e.g: queen) and say: quilt Jump on the False side.

- T uses the picture of the dialogue on page 30(Student book 1) to lead Ss in the conversation - Ask students to look at the 4 pictures  in the book and check comprehension by eliciting the answers for these questions.

    Ss: They are Linda, Mary  and Mai.

    T: Where are they?

    Ss: They are in the school.

   T: What are they talking about?

   Ss: They are talking about new friend- Mary.

- Play the recording all the way throught for Ss to listen and follow in their book.

- Play the recording again for Ss repeat the text several times.( line by line in the bubbles).

- Point to the picture for Ss to read the dialogue  again - Have Ss to find out the new structure.

Activity 2. Point and say.(15’) a. Prestenting new words.

Have pupils look at pictures on Page 26. Elicit the characters in the pictures and their names.

Review numbers from 1 to 10.

- Play the recording and listen to the song “ The more we get together”

- Play the recording again for pupils to sing each line of the rhythm.

- Call on a group of six to the front of the class and do the actions. The others clap their hands after the song

- Group work. Pupils practise singing and doing the actions in groups. Monitor the activity and help them when necessary. Correct pronunciation Ss’ errors.

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat(7’)

* Set the scene:      

- T uses the picture of the dialogue on page 32(Student book 1) to lead Ss in the conversation - Ask students to look at the 4 pictures  in the book and check comprehension by eliciting the answers for these questions.

   T: Who are they?

Ss: They are Peter,Tony, Hoa, Nam and Mai.

    T: Where are they?

    Ss: They are in the park.

   T: What are they talking about?

   Ss: They are talking about Peter, Tony and some friends.

- Play the recording all the way throught for Ss to listen and follow in their book.

- Play the recording again for Ss repeat the text several times.( line by line in the bubbles).

- Point to the picture for Ss to read the dialogue  again - Have Ss to find out the new structure.

Activitty 2. Point and say.(15’)

Have pupils look at pictures on Page 26. Elicit the characters in the pictures and their names.

* Prestenting model sentences.

- Point to the first picture  and elicit the

 name to fill in the gap. Put the sentence on the board:  Are they your friends?Yes, they are/ No, they aren’t.

and have Ss repeat them several times.

- Check the form/ use/ meaning/ intonation

* Practice.

- Tell Ss that they are going to practice saying. Are they your friends?Yes, they are/ No, they aren’t.

- T reads – Ss listen & repeat.

- Replace the addresses by doing choral and individual repetition, using the pictures in the book.

- T asks Ss point and say.

Tell Ss that they are going to practice more with their friends. Give a few seconds for Ss to read the questions and check comprehension.

Have Ss work in pairs. Go around to offer help and correct the pronunciation, if necessary.

Call several pairs to act out the dialogue in front of the class.
