I. AIMS

1. Knowledge : By the end of the lesson, students can be able to recognize and pronounce the letter Ii and its sound correctly, understand, recognize and say the three Ii words. Write the letter Ii

2. Skills: - Develop students’ listening, reading, writing and speaking skill.

3. Attitude:- Help students’ to be more confident to communicate in English.

* Disabilities Ss: Will able to do with teacher's help.

II. TEACHING AIDS

1. Teacher’s: Lesson plan, books, computer, speaker and projector.

2. Warm up: (5’) -   Greet students

-   Review the previous lesson by playing the “Touching game”

-         Put up the goat, garden, glass cards on the board.

3. New lesson:

Teacher’s and Ss’ activities Content

Activity 1. Listen, point and repeat. Colour: (7’)

-   Write on the board the letter Ii) to introduce to the students the new lesson.

-   Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter Ii ”. The letter I says……

-   Repeat several times and check students’ ronunciation

-   Use the phonics cards with ink, gloo, iguana read the words out loud and ask students to repeat.

-   Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to understand the meanings of the three words.

-   Check students’ understanding: Teacher says the words, all students do actions and vice versa.

Activity: Memory Game (3’)

-   Put the phonics cards of ink, igloo, iguana, Ii on the board -   Ask students to memorize the order of these cards

-   Ask students to close their eyes, remove one phonics card randomly and ask individual students to name it.

-   Continue changing the other cards.

-   Remember to correct Students’ pronunciation throughout the lesson Activity 2.Listen and point. Colour. (5’)

-   Have students look at the books and listen to the words: oh no, my ink…..

-   Use gestures (hand actions) to help Students to understand the meanings of commands

-   Ask students repeat by using the phonics cards of ink, igloo, iguana combining with gestures  -   Then, ask students to colour the glass and the goat, using any colour they like.

-   Go around the classroom, asking students to name the items they are coloring

* Disabilities Ss: Colour with teacher's help.

Activity: Pass the phonics card Game  (5’)

-   Using the phonics cards of I, ink, igloo, iguana -   Line up the students into 2 teams

-   Give the first students of each team a phonics card and say “Go”

-   The students say the corresponding words and pass the phonics card over their head to the students behind them

-   Next, those students repeat the word and pass the phonics card between their legs to the students behind them

-   Continue to pass the phonics card over their heads and between their legs to the last students Activity 3.Chant and show! (Track 04) (5’)

-   Put up the lyrics of the chant on the board

-   Without music, use the phonics cards and step students to sing the chant with s. Do the same with ink, igloo, iguana

-   With music, the whole class sings the whole chant. Do the chant again using gestures for each word.

-   Give feedback

-   Show the letter Ii again, have students write the Ii in air with their fingers.

-   Divide students in 3 groups of ink, igloo, iguana -   Play the chant in Lesson 1

-   Each group mimes the corresponding actions 3. New lesson:

Lead-in Activity: Freeze (5’)

-   Divide the students into small groups -   Ask students to stand at their desks

-   Give a series of instruction, e.g. ink, igloo. Students mime the actions

-   When the teacher says Freeze!, the students must stop what they are doing and stand still -   The students who are slowest to stop are out and have to sit down

-   Continue the game until there is a group of winner Activity 4. Listen. Read Along (5’)

-   Ask the students to point to the picture of the word that the teacher says -   Play the CD. Have the students listen to the story once

-   Play the CD again. The students listen and point to the pictures of the key words when they hear them in the story.

-   Read the story. The students follow their books.

-   Teacher reads the printed words then let the students point to the pictures and say the words.

-   Ask students work in pairs. One reads the printed words while the other points to the pictures and says the words.

Activity: Say the Sight Words (5’) -   Point to and say the sight words -   Have students repeat

-   Call on some students read them aloud and correct pronunciation (if any) Activity: Bingo Game(5’)

-   Deliver individual students a sheet of paper including a grid with 3 by 3 squares -   Ask students to write a different word

-   Call out words in any order (keep a record of the words as you say them, so that you don’t say the same word twice)

-   The students cross off the words in their grids as they hear them

-   The first student to complete a line of three shouts Bingo!

Activity 5. Song (Track 45) (5’) -   Put the song lyrics up the board -   Instruct students to read the drill

-   Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the song

-   Play the CD. The students listen, sing along and point to the pictures on their book -   Play the CD again. The students sing and do corresponding actions

Activity: Hot Cards Game (5’) -   Have students stand at their desks -   Hand out the phonics cards

-   Play the song. While the song is playing, the students pass the phonics cards to the next student

-   When the song stops, the student holding the phonics cards must name them -   Remember to correct students’ pronunciation

2. Warm up: (5’)

-   Prepare all phonics cards from the four  previous units (Rr, Ss, Tt, Uu) -   Ask the students to work in pair

-   Give each pair one phonics card.

-   Say one of the words.

-   Ask pairs to raise their corresponding cards.

3. New lesson:

Teacher’s and Ss’ activities Content

Activity 1: Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 55): Introduction of letter V, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Vv(5’)

-   Show the students the van phonic card. Point to it and say: /v/. The students repeat.

-   Then say /v/- van. The students repeat.

-   Put the phonics card on the board. Mime driving a van and say: /v/- van. Encourage the students to do the same.

-   Say the letter, the students perform the action and say the letter and the word.

-   Follow the same procedure: /v/- vase (mime arranging flowers in a vase), /v/- violet(mime smelling a violet)

-   Write the letter Vv on the board next to the phonics cards. Point to it and say: “This is the letter /vi:/. The letter  /vi:/ makes the /v/ sound. The students repeat /vi:/- /v/

* Disabilities Ss: Do with teacher's help.

Activity: What is it? (4 mins)

-   Teacher holds up a phonics card, partly hidden by a sheet of paper.

-   Slowly reveal the phonics cards. The students try to guest what the phonics card is.

Activity: Where’s the letter? (Optional)

-   Teacher prepares photocopies of a page/ pages from some story books.

-   Ask the students to work in pairs/ groups

-   Hand out the photocopies and ask students to search for and circle the letter Vv on the page(s).

-   In a limited time, the pair/ group has circled the most Vvs is the winner.

-   This game can help the students understand the link between the letter sounds and words in books.

 

Pupil’s book open. (5’)

- Point to and elicit the sound of the letter and the words. /v/- van, /v/- vase, /v/- violet - Play the CD. The students listen, point and repeat.

- The students color the letters Vv (explain that they can use any colors they like).

- Teacher goes around the class and elicits the letter and the word from individual students.

Activity 2: Listen and point. Choose. (Track 56): Read the words in sentence (7’) -   Point to the van and say: This is my pretty van! The students repeat.

-   Follow the same procedure for vase and the violet.

-   Play the CD. The students listen and point.

-   Say: This is my pretty van! Ask the students to point to the corresponding item in the picture.

Repeat with the rest of the items in random order.

-   Ask the students to look at the pairs of pictures on the side and choose the correct one for each corresponding item..

-   Go around the classroom asking students to name the item they are matching.

e.g. Teacher: (point to the van) This is my pretty …       Student 1: van! Etc

* Disabilities Ss: Do with teacher's help.

Activity 3: Chant and show! (Track 57) (5’)

-   Put up the van, vase, violet  phonics cards on the board

-   Point to the phonics cards and say: /v/- van, /v/- vase, /v/- violet. The students repeat.

-   Play the CD. The students listen, follow in their books and chant.

-   Ask the students to do the actions of the words when they chant. OR ask the students to take out their own van, vase, violet picture cards and place them on their dersks. Play the CD again.

The students listen and hold up the corresponding picture cards.

-   Repeat the chant without the CD. Keep the rhythm by clapping hands. Pause before the words (van, vase, violet) and encourage the students to name the items.

e.g. Teacher: /v/

      Students: van       Teacher: /v/, /v/, /v/

      Students: van! etc

Activity: Chant in group (Optional)

Divide the class into 3 groups (van, vase, violet). Each group says the appropriate chant while the rest of the class claps.

Ask each group to mime the corresponding action or show the corresponding phonics cards while they chant.

* Disabilities Ss: Chant with teacher's help.

Production (5’)

Activity: Writing in the air

-   Show the letter Vv again, have students write the Vv in air with their fingers.

 

Activity: Memory Game

-   Put up the phonics cards on the board and ask the students to memorize the order in which the items appear.

-   Ask individual students to name the items in the correct order.

-   Change the order of the phonics cards and repeat the activity.

-   Read the story. The students follow in their books.

-   Teacher reads the printed words then let the students look at the pictures and say the words.

-   Ask students work in pairs. One reads while the other checks, then they swap roles. Or one reads the printed words while the other looks at the pictures and says the words.

-   Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help.

Activity: Say the Sight Words (4’)

-   Point to and say the sight words: this, is, my, pretty, there, a, in -   Have students repeat

-   Have some students read them aloud.

Activity: Draw it (5’)

-   Divide the class into 2 teams, A and B. Ask two students from each team to come to the board -   Teacher names a vocabulary item. In 30 seconds, the 2 students have to finish drawing it.

-   The student who finishes first wins a point for his/ her team.

-   The team with more points wins.

Activity 2: Song (Track 59) (5’)

-   Put up the van, vase, violet phonics cards up on the board.

-   Point to the van and say: There is a vase in the van. The students repeat.

-   Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the song.

-   Play the CD. The students listen and sing along.

-   Play the CD again. The pupils sing and do corresponding actions. OR ask the students to take out their own van, vase, violet picture cards and place them on their desks. Play the CD again.

The students listen and hold up the corresponding picture cards.

 

Activity: Pass the phonics card (5’) -   Line up the students in two teams.

-   Give the first student of each team a phonics card.

-   Say: ‘Go!” then the students say the words in the card and pass it over their head to the student behind them, who continues saying the word and passing the card to the behind one.

-   The last student in each line races to hand their phonics card to the teacher and says the word.

-   The first team to do so wins (or wins a point- then continue the game).

While the students are passing the cards, teacher can say: “Stop” and ask the students holding the cards say the word loudly.

- Have pupils act out the dialogue in pairs or groups for correction.

- Ask some questions to ensure pupils’ comprehension of the listening text.

Activity 3. Let’s chant(10’)

Tell Ss that they are going to say the

“ Where’s the book?” chant.

Have them read the chant and check comprehension.

Play the recording all through Ss listen and  follow in their books.

Play the recording again Ss listen and  read line by line.

Divide the class into2 groups .G1: read the questions, G2: read the answers.

Then exchange.

When they are familiar with the rhythm, show them how to say the chant and do the actions.

Get groups  of Ss to sit face to face and practice chanting and doing the actions. Get around and offer help, if necessary..

    T: Where are they?

- Play the recording all the way throught for Ss to listen and follow in their book.

- Play the recording again for Ss repeat the text several times.( line by line in the bubbles).
