LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED, LISTEN AND READ A. Objectives:

1. Knowledge

- Reading for details the dialogue between Hoa and Tim’s family.

- Learn some vocabulary about the topic.

2. Skills

- Reading comprehension skill, listening, asking and answering skill.

3. Attitude

- Students know more places of interest in Viet Nam and have awareness to protect them.

B.Teaching aids: text book, projector, tape.

C. Methods: Jumbled words, matching, T/ F statements, question and answer D. Contents:

*Jumbled words: (CNTT) - Write the topic “Places of interest “ on the board.

- Show the words on the screen.

- Divide Sts into 2 teams.

- Ask each team to connect the words to make the right phrases for places of

interest and write them on the board as fast as possible.

*Getting Started:

- Ask Ss to open their books and match the names with the pictures.

- Call on some Ss to give their answers.

- Call some Ss to read the proper names aloud.

III. New lesson(35’)

Step 1: Pre - reading (13’)

- Today, we are going to read a dialogue about how to express interest .Let's start

Places of interest

* Getting Started Key: a. Ngo Mon Gate b. Nha rong Harbor c. The Temple Literature d. Ha Long Bay

with some new words.

- Elicit words from sts.

1. Pre- teach

- Something such as grain, rice , fruit … is grown in one season.

- It is used to make sugar.

- (translation)

- The drive takes 40 minutes. It 's a forty- minute drive.

- Ask sts to notice that a plural noun must be changed to the singular form when preceding the noun it modifies in a noun phrase.

- Have sts drill some more: (oral =>

writing).

- Sts listen

- Listen and repeat (chorally then individually)

- Copy.

* Checking vocabulary: Rub out and remember

2. Guiding questions: (CNTT)

- Set the scene and show the questions on the board.

- Ask Ss to think about the questions in a few minutes.

Step 2: While - reading (15’)

- Have Ss listen to the tape while reading the dialogue

- Get Ss to work in pairs to answer the questions

- Call on some pairs to give their answers - Feedback

- Ask Ss to listen to the tape and say out True or False

- Read the sentences aloud and call on some Ss to answer, then have them correct the false sentences and get them to write in their notebooks.

- Call on some groups of five to practice the dialogue in front of class

- Correct their pronunciation

I. Vocabulary

- Crop (n): vụ mùa, mùa màng - Sugar cane (n): cây mía - Water buffalo (n): con trâu - a forty – minute drive: 40' lái xe

Eg: The vacation lasted 3 months.

=> a three– month vacation.

The boy is thirteen years old.

=> a thirteen – year old boy.

II. Reading

* Questions:

b. Is it the first time The Jones have visited Viet Nam?

* Grammar note:

- Ask Ss to read the dialogue again ,

discuss with them and ask them to pick out the sentences containing the situations mentioned below .

* To express interest:

- I'd like you to meet my parents

….

- It is nice to meet you ….

- It is great to be in Viet Nam . - I would like to sit with Tim …..

*To express a request:

- Would you mind sitting in the front seat …?

- Would you mind if I took a photo

LESSON 2: SPEAK, LANGUAGE FOCUS 3 A. Objectives:

1. Knowledge

- By the end of the lesson, student will be able to use some expressions to make and respond to formal requests using “ mind “ and make suggestions .

- Learn some vocabulary about the topic.

- Do a 15- minute test.

2. Skills

- Practice speaking skill.

- Using “mind” in polite requests in real situations.

- Ask the rest of the class to try to help the student guess what is written on the board by asking questions until he / she says outright the words on the board.

III. New lesson

Step 1: Presentation (8’) - Today , we are going to make and respond to formal requests using "mind".

1. Pre- teach structures:

- Set the scene :

- Remind Ss of the exchanges between Hoa and Mr. Jones and between Hoa and Tim in the last dialogue and elicit the sentences from Ss .

( Ha Long Bay, Dong Xuan market)

1. Model sentences

1. A: Would you mind sitting in the front seat of the taxi?

B: No problem.

2. A: Would you mind if I took a photo?

B: Not at all.

Form:

1. Would you mind / Do you mind + verb- ing …?

2. Would you mind if I + Verb ( in Past simple tense) …?

- Get Ss to copy.

Step 2: Practice (8’) (CNTT) - Show the 4 word cues including

" v" and "x".

- T models - Sts repeat.

- T- WC - Open pairs.

- Close pairs.

Eg: Would you mind moving your car?

Step 3: Production (8’) (CNTT) - Set the scene: You are a tourist on vacation in Ho Chi Minh City.

You want to visit a market. This is the conversation between you and the tourist officer.

- Show the chat on the board and elicit the exchanges from sts and have them repeat.

+ Open pairs: Ask some pairs to demonstrate the dialogue.

+ Closed pairs: have Ss open their books and use the information on page 101 to practice other

dialogues.

* Open prediction:

- Show Sts the map p. 102

- Set the scene “ The Jones family are going around Ha Noi and they are talking about the directions to 5 places in the maps . Before listening, please guess the positions of these places on the map.

- Ask Sts to copy down the table.

- Give Sts 1 min to guess.

- Ask them for their guess.

Step 2: While - listening (15’)

* Listening and checking:

- Ask Sts to listen to the tape and match the places to the correct positions on the maps, then compare the answers with their guess before, then compare their answers with their friends.

- Play the tape 2 or 3 times

- Get some Sts to write their answers on the board.

- Play the tape once more to check the answers

( pause at some important paragraph ) - Give feedback.

Step 3: Post - listening (10’)

* Role play:

- Set the scene: Now work in pairs. One of you plays the role of a foreign tourist. The other is a Vietnamese. Practice asking and giving directions to the 5 places on the map.

Remember that you start at the Tourist Information Center.

- Divide Sts into pairs.

- T models with a good student first.
