STORY TIME

I. MỤC ĐÍCH, YÊU CẦU

I. AIMS

1. Knowledge: To consolidate the sound of the letters Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm and the corresponding words. Learn and practice reading skills.

2. Skills: - Develop students’ listening, reading, writing and speaking skill.

3. Attitude:- Help students’ to be more confident to communicate in English.

* Disabilities Ss: Will able to do with teacher's help.

II. TEACHING AIDS

2. Warm up: (5’)

-   Choose some phonics cards from Unit 9-13

-   Divide the class into 2 groups, A and B, and make two lines -   Give the first student from each team a phonics card.

-   Say “ go”

-   The student says the corresponding words and passes the card over their head to the second student.

-   The second students say the word, pass the cards between their legs to the third student

-   The last student in each line races to hand the phonics cards to the teacher and says the word.

-   The first team to do so wins 1 point for 1 card -   The team with the most points wins

3. New lesson:

Teacher’s and Ss’ activities Content

Activity 1.Listen. Read along (Track 86) (10’)

-   (book closed) Tell the students that it’s story time.

-   Ask them if they like reading stories and what their favourite storybook character is.

-   Prepare phonics cards of these word: mouse, igloo, lion, lollipop, kitten, kite, moon -   Ask the students to read out the words

-   Invite students to guess what they think the story is about.

-   Ask the students to look at the book.

-   Ask them questions about what they can see in the pictures E.g: Teacher: (pointing to the jelly in picture 1) Look! What’s this?

      Class: (It’s a) jelly!

      Teacher: (pointing to the igloo in picture 1) Yes! The jelly is in the ….

      Class: igloo! etc

-   Play the CD and ask the students to listen and follow the story in their books, pointing to the pictures of the key words.

-   Play the CD again pausing for the students to repeat.

-   Ask individual students to read the story aloud.

Extension (optional) (5’)

-   Say one of the words from the lesson (e.g. jelly) -   Ask students come to the board and draw its shape -   Ask the rest of the class give comment

Read and draw. (5’)

-   Point to the sentences and elicit the animal in each

-   Ask the students to say what each animal has, according to the story.

-   The students then draw those items

-   Explain to them that they can use any colour they like.

Act Out (5’)

-   Read the sentences in the story, pause at the key words.

-   Invite the students to mime them (the igloo, the jelly, the lion, the lollipop, the kitten, the kit, the mouse, the moon).

-   Have the students come to the front of the classroom and act out the story.

-   Encourage them to have fun as they perform.

Activity2: Drawing (5’)

Students choose their favourite items from the story and then draw, decorate it following their hobbies

-   Ask them if they remember the previous story. If not, the teacher can spend some time going through it.

-   Prepare phonics cards of these word: watch, yo-yo, box, van, zebra -   Ask the students to read out the words

-   Invite students to guess what they think the story is about.

-   Ask the students to look at the book.

-   Ask them questions about what they can see in the pictures e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the ox in picture 1) Look! What’s this?

      Class: (It’s an) ox!

      Teacher: (pointing to the watch in picture 1) Yes! The ox has a ….

-   Play the CD and ask the students to listen and follow the story in their books, pointing to the pictures of the key words.

-   Play the CD again pausing for the students to repeat (chorally and/ or individually) Finally, ask individual students to read the story aloud

Activity 2. What’s in the box? Draw and color (8’) -   Point and elicit the items.

-   Ask the students to choose the correct item and draw it in the box.

-   Explain to them that they can use any colour they like to colour the item.`

Act Out (6’)

-   Read the sentences in the story, pause at the key words and invite the students to mime them (the watch, the yo-yo, the box, the van, the zebra).

-   Have the students come to the front of the classroom and act out the story -   Encourage them to have fun as they perform

Activity: Optional Story Time Activities (6’) -   Ask the students to work in pairs

-   Ask them to change parts or all the story, use their picture cards -   Invite some pairs to present their own stories

Play the CD and have Ss repeat each line of the chant. Then change the role.

Focus Ss’ attention on the letters colored differently in the words rainy and skate - Introduce the sounds /ai/ and /a-e/      

- Have Ss practice the sounds carefully

- Play the CD and have Ss read the chant in chorus.

Activity 2. Listen and write.(10’)

Have pupils look at the sentences and guess the suitable words to fill in the blank.

- Play the recording 2 times pupils to listen and fill the blanks. Check their guess. Compare the answer with the partner.      

- Play the recording again pupils check their answers. T give the answer:

- Have pupils act out the dialogue in pairs or groups for correction.

- Ask some questions to ensure pupils’ comprehension of the listening text.

Activity 3. Let’s chant(10’)

Tell Ss that they are going to say the Chant “ Where are you?”

Have them read the chant and check comprehension.

Play the recording all through Ss listen and  follow in their books.

Play the recording again Ss listen and  read line by line.

Divide the class into2 groups .G1: read the questions, G2: read the answers.

Then exchange.

When they are familiar with the rhythm, show them how to say the chant and do the actions.

Get groups  of Ss to sit face to face and practice chanting and doing the actions. Get around and offer help, if necessary..
