Lesson 5: _Writing_

(Page 18-19) A. Aims of the lesson:

1. Knowledge:

- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to give their ideas to persuade readers to believe or do something about secondary school students should wear uniforms.

Pupils will be able to know how to write arguments.

*. Language focus:

a) Grammar: - the simple present ( review). How to write an argument.

b) Vocabulary: - In conclusion , bear, equal, freedom, self – confident. encourage (v) bear – bore – born mang equal, practical 9adj) freedom, opinion, therefore, in conclusion.

2. Skills:

- Practice writing the passage to persuade other people should wear the clothes such as school uniform or traditional Ao dai.

*. Kĩ năng sống:

- Giáo dục cho học sinh nắm vững về khả năng kiên định khi đưa ra một hành động hay việc làm nào đó để giải quyết vấn đề.

- Biết hợp tác cùng người khác để có những mẫu mã sáng tạo mới, đẹp. Khi không có sự hợp tác phải biết cách tìm kiếm sự hỗ trợ.

II. Warm – up. (06’)

*. Chatting

- Ask Ss some questions about their feeling when wearing different types of clothing.

? How often do you wear uniform?

? How do you feel when wearing uniform?

? If you have a choice, what type of clothing do you want to wear when going to school? Why do you choose it?

- T – W. C. -> Ss do individual.

- Teacher; Feedback and corrects.

III. New lesson: (37 minutes)

Steps / Activities. Work Arrangement.

1. Pre – Writing. (08’).

- Ss look at three parts of the writing - Then Ss take note

- T asks Ss to look at the part a) in book, read the Outline and the model writing talking about Secondary school students should wear uniforms - Ss note the words underlined in the writing.

- Checking vocabulary: Rub out and remember.

* Pre – teach vocabulary.

- persuade (v): thuyết phục

- (to) encourage (v): Động viên, khuyến khích.

- encouragement (n): sự khuyến khích - to be proud of: (v): tự hào

- Practical (adj): thực tế, hiển nhiên - (to) be equal in: Công bằng

- (to) bear one’s name (picture). Mang tên một ai đó

- Freedom of choice (translation).Tự do lựa chọn

- Self – confident (a) Tự tin

* Presentation: (05’)

- Stick or draw the following table on the board.

- Tell Ss it is the outline to present one side of an argument.

- Give out to the Ss sets of different color strips of paper, on which the content of the outline is written as follow:

+ Give examples where possible sum up the argument.

Finally, ...

In conclusion, ... / There for

- Ask Ss to go to the board, stick the strips on the correct space.

- They can do this task as a game.

Group which has more strips fillings in the table with correct content is the winner.

- Ask Ss to answer the questions to check their understanding.

“Introduction”? What language is used?

+ How can we present series of arguments? What language is used?

+ What do you write in conclusion?

T says “ you have read an argument the supports the idea the secondary school should wear uniforms. Now use the Outline B as the guidelines, write a paragraph that supports the argument that secondary students should wear casual clothes.”

- T asks Ss to write the passage about 15 minutes ( individually )

- Ss compare the answer with classmates - T goes around the class and choose one or two passage in order to correct before the class.

- T gives the answer on the board.

- Ss take note

- T gives a lot of words which depend on two opinions “ for” or “ against” with wearing uniform clothes.

2. While – Writing. (14’).

- Ask Ss to read the topic and outline A.

- Ask Ss some comprehension questions.

- Ask Ss to read the outline B and answer the questions:

+ What is the topic of the argument?

+ Why should secondary Ss wear casual clothes? (Wearing uniforms make Ss feel comfortable, give them freedom of choice, make Ss feel confident, make school more colorful and lively).

- Ask Ss on their own to write a paragraph of 100 – 150 words to support the argument that secondary school Ss should wear casual clothes, using the outline on page 19.

3. Conclusion. (Post – Writing). (07’).

- When Ss have finished writing, let them compare with their partners.

- Feedback and then corrects their mistakes.

- T divide class into small groups, which group does quickly and the right is winner.

- Ss practice freely

+ What is the topic of the passage?

+ Why do the students wear uniforms encourage Ss to be proud of their school?

(Because the uniforms bear their school’s name).

+ How do Ss feel when wearing uniforms?

(They feel equal in many ways).

+ Do Ss have to think of what to wear every day? (No).

- Take some writings to correct in front of the class.

5. Home work. (03’)

- Ask Ss to write the passage into their notebooks.

- Ask Ss to prepare next lesson “Unit 2 – Lesson 6: Language focus”

1. Knowledge:

- By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to use the present perfect tense and the passive by doing a variety of exercises.

- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to use “already” and “yet” in the present perfect tense, distinguish the difference between the past simple and the present perfect tense; and be able to use the passive form of the present perfect, simple present, simple past and simple future; practice passive model auxiliaries.
