UNIT 1: A VISIT FROM A PENPAL I. Focus of skill knowledge:

1. Topic: Friends & penpals.

2. Competences:

- Introducing people.

- Making and responding to introduction.

3.Skills:

- Speaking: make and respond to introductions.

- Listening: listen to momologues/ dialogues within 100- 120 words for general or detailed information.

- Reading: read passages within 150-180 words for general or detailed information.

- Writing: write an exposition of 80-100 words from picture and word cues.

4. Grammar:

- Past simple: regular and irregular verbs.

- To talk about a past action or event that is finished - Used to (review)

- Past simple with wish 5. Vocabulary:

- Words to describe the geography of a country: climates, population, religions, languages, social customs, habits.

UNIT 1 : A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL LESSON 1 : - Getting started - Listen and read A.Objectives:

1. Aims:

- Read the text for details about places Lan went to with her foreign friends and activities they took part in.

- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to know more about some places Lan went to with a foreign friend and some activities they took part in.

2. Practice skill:

- Practice the comprehension reading skill,writing and speaking skill.

3. The knowledge needs to get:

+ Standard knowledge: Read the text for details about places Lan went to with her foreign friends and activities they did.

+ Advanced knowledge: Answer some questions about the text,Use the past simple with “wish” in the present

4. Basic language:

- Vocabulary: correspond, impress, depend on, pray, friendliness, mosque.

- Structure: S + wish(es) (that) + clause ( be- were / past tense) 5. Attitude:

- Help ss to have good consciousness in order to practice reading for detalis, doing some exercises and use S + wish(es) (that) + clause ( be- were / past tense)

B. Teaching- aids:

Lesson plan, textbooks, pictures, poster.

C. Methods:

- Model-Talk-Practice, individual work, pair work

- Some techniques can be used: Rub out and remember, open prediction, multiple choice, comprehension questions, word cue drill.

*Getting started :

- Askss to run through the pictures - Give instructions

- Ask ss to look at 6 pictures on page 6 and other interesting places in Viet Nam , talk about the activities and places they are going to visit or do with with her/his penpal.

III. NEW LESSON : ( 35 ') Step 1: Pre - reading

- Today, we are going to read about some places LAN went to with a foreign friend and some activities they took part in together.

Let's start with some new words.

1.Pre -teach vocabulary:

Possible answers:

S1: What places and activities are you going to visit and do with your penpal?

S2: We are going to visit The temple of Literature, churches, beaches, markets, theaters...

1. Vocabulary

- Each time T rubs out an English word, points to the Vietnamese translation and ask

“What’s this in English?”

- When all the English words are rubbed out, go through the Vietnamese list and get student to call the English words.

- If there is time, get students to come to the board and write the English words again.

2. Open prediction :

- Lan’s Malaysian pen pal came to visit her in Hanoi. Can you guess where she went and what she did during her stay?

- Give feedback to the whole class to the open prediction.

Step 2 : While - reading 1. Read and check

- Ask SS read the text to check their

prediction and add some more information.

2. Choose the correct option :

- Ask read the text again to choose the correct option to complete the sentences on page 7 ( work in pairs )

Step 3: Post - reading a. Model sentences:

Use: We can use 'wish' to talk about something that we would like to be different in the present or the future.

It's used for things which are impossible or very unlikely.

A. Objectives:

1. Aims:

- Making and responding to introductions

- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to make and respond to introduction.

2. Practice skill:

- Practice speaking skill and writing skill.

3. The knowledge needs to get:

+ Standard knowledge: Making and responding to introductions + Advanced knowledge: make the similar dialogues.

4. Basic language:

- The tense: simple present tense.

5. Attitude:

- Help ss to have good consciousness in order to practice speaking , making some similar dialogues.

B. Teaching- aids:

Lesson plan, textbooks, pictures, poster.

C. Methods:

- Model-Talk-Practice, individual work, pair work

- Teacher introduces the situation: Nga is talking to Maryam. They are waiting for Lan outside her school.

- Ask Sts to do exercise a) on page 8. The students have to work in pairs to put the sentences in the correct order to make a complete dialogue.

Mapped Dialogue:

- Set the scene: “You are talking to Maryam’s friends. Introduce yourself.”

- Put the dialogue on the board.

- Elicit the exchanges from Sts and have them repeat .

- Ask Sts to take turn to be one of Maryam’s friends and practice (open pairs => close pairs)

* E.g:

A: Hello. You must be Yoko.

B: That’s right, I am.

A: Please to meet you, Let me introduce myself. I'm ... .

B: Please to meet you. I'm ...

A: Are you enjoying your stay in Viet Nam?

B: Oh, yes. I like Vietnamese people and I love old cities in Viet Nam.

A: Do you live in the city, too?

B: Yes, I live in Tokyo. Have you been there?

A: No. What’s it like?

B: It’s a busy big capital city. It’s very different from Hue.

Step 3 : Post - speaking Write it up:

- Ask Sts to write paragraphs about Yoko, Paul and Jane, using the information from "Speak".
